Tracking the tunnels

While most people can navigate campus as the crow flies, Bill McCreary knows his way around as the mole digs. McCreary worked maintenance on the miles of steam tunnels under MSU for 15 years and knows how to make his way from Hubbard Hall to the Red Cedar River - underground. "They're pretty good-sized tunnels, most of them you can get through all right," the 76-year-old Lansing resident said.

E.L. officials lobby to prevent speed limit increases

East Lansing officials are preparing to lobby state representatives to keep the speed down on Grand River Avenue. A study by the Michigan State Police and the Michigan Department of Transportation is looking at speed limits on Grand River Avenue and Saginaw Highway to calculate the 85th percentile of speed limits driven on the state-funded roads.

Students cope with credit debt

By Jason Worthy For The State News For Jamael Williams, credit cards are a way of life. Receiving his first credit card at 16, the now 20-year-old mathematics sophomore was already depending on the card as one would depend on a job salary. "I used it about once every other day," Williams said.

Alumni, students can't see eye to eye

Gary Herbert the sophomore and Fred Tilton the graduate: relax ("Graduates do not represent 'voice'" SN 4/16 and "Graduates are actual voice of 'U'" SN 4/17). Herbert is right - Tilton is not at MSU right now - he's working his job at who-knows-where, reacting to events he only experiences through the media.

RHA's stance on diversity probed

Less than one week after a former member accused MSU Residence Halls Association officials of not promoting diversity, RHA President Derek Wallbank said diversity is one of the organization's main focuses.The distribution of a letter written by former Director of Racial, Ethnic and Progressive Affairs LaToya Logan accused RHA of poor representation of diversity among constituents.But Wallbank said the organization has allocated most of its funds to programs for campus diversity, and recently won the statewide award for diversity given by the Michigan Organization of Residence Housing Association.

McPherson's role may help 'U' image

MSU President M. Peter McPherson's efforts to rebuild Iraq's economy could help the university regain part of its reputation - one tainted by last month's disturbances. The disturbances resulted in dozens of arrests and $40,000 in damage. McPherson's role in Iraq's reconstruction won't cancel out the riots, but will have a lasting affect on the university, public relations Professor Brenda Wrigley said. "One incident can undo years of hard work and building up of a reputation," Wrigley said.

Employees at the MSU Computer Center are still investigating the cause of Sunday's inaccessibility to a new Web-based e-mail system launched last month. The site, located at mail.msu.edu, was inaccessible for most of Sunday.

A female Central Michigan University student was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis over the weekend, the first case at that university in about 20 years, CMU officials say. The student was a resident of Woldt Hall on campus.
