Museum founder recalls near-lynching

James Cameron was scheduled to be lynched in Marion, Ind., on Aug. 7, 1930.The 89-year-old man sat in his wheelchair in front of a full auditorium in the Kellogg Center on Monday speaking in a slow and calm, yet strong, voice about his near-lynching experience.

In response to "Freshman 15 should not be perpetuated" (SN 9/10), the freshman 15 could be something to think about. I have observed friends and other peers around the campus who have gained a noticeable amount of weight after one or two years in college.

Bush pushes energy legislation

Monroe - Beneath the steel beams and metal pipes of a towering Detroit Edison warehouse, President Bush promoted environmental and energy plans Monday that would ease regulations for Detroit-based DTE Energy, one of the nation's largest coal-fired plants.After touring the Monroe plant, Bush said his Clear Skies legislation would allow energy companies to modernize equipment and create new jobs."We can grow our economy and protect the environment at the same time," Bush said of Detroit Edison and its parent company DTE Energy.

The No. 17 MSU volleyball team went into the U.S. Bank/Arby's Classic, facing three higher-ranked teams, looking for answers to where they stand nationally in the college volleyball ranks.The Spartans now know.After what could be dubbed a disappointing weekend, where they won only one match, the Spartans (6-2) found hope when recalling their pre-tournament thoughts - a possible three-loss weekend.Sunday's victory saved face."One win makes this a successful weekend," head coach Chuck Erbe said.

MIDDAY UPDATE: Mars approach has 'U' looking up

Megan McCullen was one of about 1,000 people who ventured to the MSU Observatory in early September to catch a glimpse of Mars during its closest approach to Earth in nearly 60,000 years."It's like a concert event out here," the anthropology graduate student said.The MSU Observatory, located on the corner of College and Forest roads, invites the public to view the skies through its high-powered telescope one weekend each month, physics and astronomy Professor Horace Smith said.

Not a crime to hurt someone's feelings

I would like to offer my support of Jason Miller's "Standard for Free Speech is Truth" (SN 9/3). In view of both the letter and the spirit of the First Amendment's guarantee of freedom of speech, we must understand that both our personal responsibilities and our constitutional liberties are both equal and valid.
