MIDDAY UPDATE: Lansing Everett center commits to 'U' basketball team

Lansing Everett basketball center Goran Suton announced he will be playing at MSU next season at a news conference Wednesday morning.The 6-foot-10, 250-pounder chose MSU over Arizona State, after eliminating Louisiana State as an option earlier in the week."I'm going to stay here and be a Spartan," Suton said in Everett's Earvin "Magic" Johnson Gymnasium.Suton said he was much more comfortable with the coaching staff at MSU, including head coach Tom Izzo and assistants Mark Montgomery and Dwayne Stephens.

MIDDAY UPDATE: 'U' to offer free depression screening

The fall semester, especially the time around midterms, is the busiest time of year for students seeking help for depression or anxiety-related disorders, counselors say.Depression, which affects between 17 and 19 million Americans each year, is also one of the top three concerns for college students dealing with the transition of living away from home, academic and financial responsibilities and social demands.Depression, which differs from occasional sadness or mood swings, can occur when feelings include extreme despair which lasts for several weeks, fatigue, loss of appetite, irritability or sleep pattern disturbances.The MSU Psychological Clinic is offering free mental health screenings in Olds Hall from 5-9 p.m.

The quality of education makes quality of life in this day and age. But the federal government seems to have different expectations for the future of this generation and the nation. Future doctors, lawyers, teachers and even economists of our nation could be forced to forfeit their college degree because their goals are undermined by reductions in state funding and grants for higher education.

Rogers injures collarbone

Detroit Lions wide receiver Charles Rogers broke his right collarbone in practice Tuesday. Rogers, a former Spartan who won the Biletnikoff Award last year at MSU, was taken to a hospital and is still being evaluated, according to Detroit Lions officials. Rogers "got tangled up" with cornerback Dre' Bly in the morning practice on Tuesday, head coach Steve Mariucci said. "(Rogers) went up for a pass and went down on his shoulder," Mariucci said.

ASMSU officials concerned with college merger

Some ASMSU officials plan to show concerns about lack of student involvement in a decision to downsize the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.The university's student government plans to follow the lead of the college's own student government, the student senate, which recently passed a bill to show its opposition to the merger that was discussed without student opinion.Two representatives in MSU's undergraduate student government introduced a bill during the weekly Academic Assembly meeting last Tuesday, but it was put on hold pending further student involvement and current student reactions to the merger.

Okemos woman guilty in hit-and-run death

A 42-year-old woman is responsible for the hit-and-run death of a 40-year-old man on Grand River Avenue in Okemos last year, a jury ruled Tuesday.After a trial that extended nearly four weeks, the 12-member Ingham County Circuit Court jury found Susan Swanson guilty of drunken driving causing death and leaving the scene of an accident, Ingham County Assistant Prosecutor Joyce Draganchuk said.Swanson, of Okemos, is scheduled to be sentenced Nov.

In the middle of a recruiting season marred with wavering interest and flip-flopping commitments, the MSU football coaching staff finally got some good news Monday night.Tom Dance, a speedy 6-foot-2 all-around athlete from Erie Cathedral Preparatory School, verbally committed to the Spartans after an official recruiting trip this past weekend.

Turnover margin key in 'U' success

It seems simple enough, but in recent years, MSU has had a problem keeping control of the football.With the re-emergence of quarterback Jeff Smoker and linebacker Mike Labinjo, one of the major reasons for the Spartans' early success is winning the turnover battle.The past two seasons, the Spartans (5-1 overall, 2-0 Big Ten) gave up the football 52 times and gained it on an opposition turnover 44 times.

In response to Rachel Burling's comment ("New station music doesn't have 'Edge'" SN 9/25) that The Edge was the only station around that played "this awesome mix" of good new and old music, I would like to ask, what about our dear old campus radio station, The Impact?

We are writing in response to Dale Hitchcock's letter "Uniforms without names need to go" (SN 10/3). Hitchcock's notion that the university has taken the names off of the football players' uniforms to sell more programs is asinine.
