Stossel talks to 'U' on freedom

Facing a crowd of more than 200 students Tuesday night in Kedzie Hall, ABC "20/20" news anchorman John Stossel spoke about the importance of free market."Capitalism is vile on college campuses, and it is good for people to hear that point of view," he said before the lecture.Stossel also addressed the disadvantages of government regulation in his speech "Freedom and its Enemies.""When the government protects us from the bad stuff, it also protects us from the good stuff too," Stossel said in his speech.

Web mentor program upgraded

Improvements to an online mentoring program for women in engineering and sciences will make finding a mentor easier for MSU students.MentorNet, a national one-on-one mentoring program that started in 1998, has been upgraded this year to allow students to select their mentors from a pool of professionals.Tom Wolff, associate dean for undergraduate studies in the MSU College of Engineering, said the upgrades improve the program, which he said has gradually improved since it was introduced at MSU in 2001.

Prostitution law reviewed

The Lansing City Councilwill vote next week on the reinstatement of an ordinance allowing police to seize vehicles of prostitute solicitors. After a three-year trial period, council members are evaluating the effectiveness of the ordinance to decide whether to renew it. "Public prostitution has got to stop," Lansing resident Christine Timmon said.

'U' students upset about Spartan Stadium addition

When the proposal to construct an addition to Spartan Stadium breezed through the MSU Athletics Department and Board of Trustees on Friday, the plan received full support from university officials.But some students aren't as enthusiastic.The addition to Spartan Stadium - scheduled to be completed in August 2005 - will bring 24 luxury boxes, 862 indoor and outdoor club-level seats and office space for University Development and the MSU Alumni Association.The entire plan is expected to cost $61 million, $50 million of that cost being paid by the Athletics Department.

Students to talk about democracy, terrorism

MSU students Daniel Grimm and Andrew McCoy will speak about the two weeks they spent in Israel studying international democracy and strategies for fighting terrorism today.Grimm and McCoy were chosen last spring to participate in the Federal Defense for Democracies Fellowship program.

I'd like to see a member of the public serve someone other than him or herself or any ideologies he or she subscribes to (race, religion, creed, gender, political party), and often enough to make a difference in the general state of this community and the world.

E.L. noise policy may see changes

An East Lansing official said Tuesday there was "short turnaround" on the final version of the city's new policy on party noise that mandates steep fines and jail time for the most serious offenders.Deputy City Manager Jean Golden said officials will consider feedback in the months ahead that could eventually lead to changes in the policy.

Green Spiral helps Pagans find community

Most MSU students get their first exposure to Paganism from a green spiral or pentacle chalked onto the sidewalks on campus - markings accompanied by an announcement for the next Green Spiral meeting. For a lot of them, that's all they ever see. But Christopher Chase wants MSU students to have a better understanding of Paganism. Chase, an American Studies graduate student, is an organizer of Green Spiral, MSU's student Pagan group.

The MSU College of Human Ecology's Advising Center will be one of 12 advising programs recognized nationally this year for excellence in advising.The college will receive the Outstanding Institutional Advising Program Certificate of Merit from the National Academic Advising Association.
