Student deals with depression

For April Husted, it was the little things that began to add up. She was sleeping more than usual, had stopped eating and had no desire to attend class. But it hadn't always been that way for the psychology senior. When Husted, who is a Saline resident, returned to school after winter break her freshman year, she was looking forward to a new semester. But as the winter months set in, complete with frigid days and dark, somber afternoons, the psychology senior's mood began to change.

ASMSU officials concerned with college merger

Some ASMSU officials plan to show concerns about lack of student involvement in a decision to downsize the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.The university's student government plans to follow the lead of the college's own student government, the student senate, which recently passed a bill to show its opposition to the merger that was discussed without student opinion.Two representatives in MSU's undergraduate student government introduced a bill during the weekly Academic Assembly meeting last Tuesday, but it was put on hold pending further student involvement and current student reactions to the merger.

Rogers injures collarbone

Detroit Lions wide receiver Charles Rogers broke his right collarbone in practice Tuesday. Rogers, a former Spartan who won the Biletnikoff Award last year at MSU, was taken to a hospital and is still being evaluated, according to Detroit Lions officials. Rogers "got tangled up" with cornerback Dre' Bly in the morning practice on Tuesday, head coach Steve Mariucci said. "(Rogers) went up for a pass and went down on his shoulder," Mariucci said.

The quality of education makes quality of life in this day and age. But the federal government seems to have different expectations for the future of this generation and the nation. Future doctors, lawyers, teachers and even economists of our nation could be forced to forfeit their college degree because their goals are undermined by reductions in state funding and grants for higher education.

The fall semester, especially the time around midterms, is the busiest time of year for students seeking help for depression or anxiety-related disorders, counselors say.Depression, which affects between 17 and 19 million Americans each year, is also one of the top three concerns for college students dealing with the transition of living away from home, academic and financial responsibilities and social demands.Depression, which differs from occasional sadness or mood swings, can occur when feelings include extreme despair which lasts for several weeks, fatigue, loss of appetite, irritability or sleep pattern disturbances.The MSU Psychological Clinic is offering free mental health screenings in Olds Hall from 5-9 p.m.

Lansing Everett basketball center Goran Suton announced he will be playing at MSU next season at a news conference Wednesday morning.The 6-foot-10, 250-pounder chose MSU over Arizona State, after eliminating Louisiana State as an option earlier in the week."I'm going to stay here and be a Spartan," Suton said in Everett's Earvin "Magic" Johnson Gymnasium.Suton said he was much more comfortable with the coaching staff at MSU, including head coach Tom Izzo and assistants Mark Montgomery and Dwayne Stephens.
