New Web site exhibits 'U' artwork

A new Web site created by the MSU Public Art on Campus Committee has put campus artwork on display for the world to see. The new site, publicart.msu.edu, allows surfers to take a look at the 903 pieces of art displayed in locations throughout campus. The committee was established in 1999 by the MSU Board of Trustees.

International aid to be focus of meeting

The Michigan chapter of Partners of the Americas is holding an informational meeting on campus to recruit interested students. The organization pairs students with experts in fields who help struggling communities in Latin-American countries, including Belize and the Dominican Republic, with ecological and social issues. The meeting will be at 10 a.m.

Former Spartan returns home for all-star classic

On this day three years ago, the MSU hockey team was No. 1 in the nation, Ron Mason was head coach and then-sophomore goaltender Ryan Miller was having his Hobey Baker Memorial Award-winning season. The team is now 16-13-1 as of yesterday afternoon, Mason is MSU athletics director, and Miller is in his second year with the Rochester (N.Y.) Americans, the minor-league affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres. But this weekend, the former Spartans standout returns to his home state to represent the American Hockey League in its 2004 AHL All-Star Classic in Grand Rapids.

Fraternity motivates youth

Lansing - Thursday morning, more than 100 Lansing middle- and high-school students assembled to be inspired. The Lansing chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity hosted its 16th annual Youth Workshop for young black men at Harry Hill High School, 5815 Wise Road in Lansing.

Right to Life petition gains support

A petition drive launched by abortion opponents to outlaw partial-birth abortion gathered more than 100,000 of the 254,206 necessary signatures in its first three weeks. The campaign, which is spearheaded by Right to Life of Michigan, has 180 days to gather the signatures, and the goal is about 40 percent complete.

Stumble into Bryan Hall during the day, and you'll most likely find a pair of roommates with mouses in their hands, clicking away at their computers. History freshman Quinn Guernsey and his roommate, human biology freshman Chris Hewitt, shrug their shoulders when they say they spend five or six hours a day on the Internet, convinced they're normal.

Big man's offense merits team MVP

Picking the Spartans' MVP so far this season is a no-brainer. It's got to be Paul Davis. It seems like the easy way out, because Davis is the team's leading scorer and because he gets the most attention, but no player has been as important to the team as Davis. MSU's offense runs through Davis, and it should.

3 candidates plan to visit Mich. before caucus

With Saturday's Michigan Democratic caucus fast approaching, many candidates are penciling in statewide visits in a last-ditch effort to garner support. Presidential hopefuls John Kerry, Howard Dean and Dennis Kucinich all have plans to campaign throughout the state Friday to attract voters who have not already chosen a candidate. Along with Washington, Michigan will be the next site of candidate selection after the seven states that hosted Democratic caucuses or primaries Tuesday.

2 propane tanks cause E.L. blaze

The East Lansing fire marshal confirmed on Wednesday the cause of an early morning house fire in northern East Lansing. Fire Marshal Bob Pratt said heat from two 250-pound propane tanks kept on a wooden floor caused the fire. The fire broke out at 462 Anhinga Drive, a house under construction in the Hawk Nest Community near Chandler Road, shortly after 12:30 a.m.

At Friday's Michael Moore guest lecture, I encountered a group of protesters standing outside, one of them bearing a sign reading, "Michael Moore is a communist." Upon seeing this man's sign, I made an off-hand remark to which he sharply responded.
