Sequel a cut below original 'Barbershop'

There's just something missing with "Barbershop 2: Back in Business." The original "Barbershop" was such a breath of fresh air, a comedy about the everyday life of an inner-city barbershop faced with foreclosure that was so funny and so touching that you just couldn't help but love it. All the principle characters return for the sequel.

In the zone

Citizens caught in the zoning crossroads of East Lansing are taking a calculated risk - if they buy a home near a vacant commercially zoned area, a business might plant down next to them, or they might get lucky and be able to keep that warm, fuzzy neighborhood feeling.

Lack of defense hurting Spartans

The Spartans are in the thick of another grueling practice. For the past week, their coach has publicly criticized their defensive intensity, and now he demands improvement. "Get a hand in his face," head coach Tom Izzo shouts with the authority of an army general. Players in green jerseys, mostly starters, shuffle side-to-side with their arms extended as the white shirts, mostly walk-ons and bench-warmers, pass the ball along the perimeter, waiting for the perfect opportunity to attack their teammates' defense. The practice squad struggled to find a hole in the defense but, recently, opposing teams have attacked MSU's defense with alarming success. "If you want to win a championship, if you want to get in the NCAA Tournament and make a run, there's certain things you still have to do," Izzo said.

Gophers enter Breslin to challenge Spartans' destiny

Though the Spartans' 24-point loss at Illinois further substantiated coach Tom Izzo's claim that they aren't playing good defense, the team is far from panicking. "We've got destiny in our own hands," Izzo said. MSU (12-9 overall, 7-3 Big Ten) is tied for second with Illinois in the conference and is a half game behind first-place Wisconsin (16-4, 7-2). The Spartans don't play Illinois again, but their last regular-season game is against Wisconsin, meaning they will own at least a share of the Big Ten title if they win out. "We don't need help from anywhere; we don't need teams to lose," sophomore center Paul Davis said. After playing Illinois on the road, MSU returns home to play Minnesota on Saturday.
