Spartans' win streak halted at 12

The red-hot MSU baseball team's (16-12 overall, 6-2 Big Ten) winning streak was extinguished at 12 games after losing their final two contests in a weekend series with Illinois (10-16, 3-5). MSU head baseball coach Ted Mahan said his team is tired and that is a factor that played into the Spartans' streak being snapped this weekend.

2-party system restricts choices

In response to Dave Sommers' letter "Nader votes dash hopes for Kerry" (SN 4/6), I'd like to point out that a vote for Ralph Nader is just that - a vote for Ralph Nader.

Many affiliated with 'U' torn on Iraqi struggles

As coalition troops battle resistance in Iraq, Lt. Col. James Rhoads said those on the homefront shouldn't be discouraged by mounting reports of carnage in the war-torn nation. Rather, Rhoads, of MSU's Army ROTC, said the insurgents should strengthen American resolve to bring order and stability to Iraq. "We are in a fight that has got to be won," Rhoads said.

Local 3-piece has Nirvana, coffeehouse tribute on brain

John Toman was a fourth-grader when Nirvana turned him on to rock music. He vividly recalls watching the grunge trio perform "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Territorial Pissings" on Saturday Night Live in 1992. Now, as an English senior, the singer and bass player wants people to recognize the band for what it produced - great punk rock. Toman, along with two other Nirvana fans, will perform 20 of the band's lesser-known songs tonight at Caffe Latte, 110 Charles St.

Association gives last-minute funding

With the end of the semester nearing, a number of student organizations are approaching governing groups that allocate money, hoping to get one last piece of the pie. Three such requests were presented to the Residence Halls Association General Assembly at its Wednesday meeting, but only two of the bills made it to a vote. The African Student Union put in a request for $100 to the assembly.

Photo appropriate; reveals truth of war

I'm sorry that Janelle Jennifer Jordan feels that The State News was unethical in its decision to display such graphic pictures ("Graphic picture doesn't belong in SN" SN 4/7). However, war is ugly and horrible.

Grrreat day for a Tigers fan

There are few things in my life I love more than Detroit Tigers baseball - my job, my dog, Long Islands from the Peanut Barrel, uhmm … I'd say that's it.

Spartans return home to play Big Ten opponents

After spending the majority of the season on the road, including the past six games, the MSU softball team is back in the comforts of its own dugout to open up the Big Ten season at home. The Spartans (19-14, 1-3 Big Ten) hope to put their recent woes behind them - 1-4 in the past five - as Minnesota (22-11, 3-1) and Wisconsin (21-17, 1-3) come to East Lansing.

Local floral shop celebrates 25 years

While the rest of East Lansing brooded under dreary skies Thursday, the corner of Grand River Avenue and Hagadorn Road was a floral paradise. Roses, daisies, tulips and lilies abound every day inside B-A Florist and Plant House, 1424 E.

Picture shows Iraqi occupation reality

I am sorry Janelle Jennifer Jordan's sensibilities were upset by the publication of a picture of the mutilated bodies of two "civilian" employees of the private security firm Blackwater Security Consulting in The State News ("Graphic picture doesn't belong in SN" SN 4/7). However, I think it is very appropriate that the American public is allowed to see the results of the invasion of Iraq in all their raw, unpleasant details. It is fair that Jordan feel disgusted and appalled, but perhaps her indignation is better spent considering the policies that brought about the deaths of these men, rather than blaming the media that allowed her to see something so unpleasant. I, for one, applaud The State News for fulfilling its journalistic obligations, especially when so many other media outlets failed. John Brazier 1989 graduate

Let it out!

After months of secrecy, closed-door meetings and on-the-hush debate, it finally has happened - MSU and the city of Grand Rapids have reached a compromise on how to divide the College of Human Medicine unequally between the two locations.

Spartans leave comfort of home

The Spartans couldn't have asked for a better way to finish their nonconference schedule and begin the Big Ten season: 10 games, 10 wins. MSU (14-10 overall, 4-0 Big Ten) knows, however, that each of those games and victories came with the comfort of playing at Kobs Field.
