Michigan has history with hand weaving

Michigan is a haven for fiber, and not the kind found in bran and beans. In Michigan, fiber means the art of handweaving. The MSU Museum is showcasing Michigan's fibrous history through "Fascination with Fiber," three exhibits featuring work from artists across the state. "This is one way we can showcase an aspect of the rich history of our state that might not be well known to the general public," said Lora Helou, communications manager for the MSU Museum.

Officials look at sites for Grand Rapids med school

MSU officials say they're eyeing real estate in Grand Rapids as a potential landing spot for the medical school but another developer might want to woo the school to its property. College of Human Medicine spokeswoman Sherry Tompkins said although nothing is set in stone, MSU officials are perusing their options in Grand Rapids. "We are very interested in seeing the college put a physical presence in the area, but nothing that I know of right now has been done in regards to land," Tompkins said.

GameDay comes to campus, brings college football spirit

Hurricane Ivan might not deliver any bad weather to the East Lansing area, but it will deliver three of TV's most well-known college football personalities. The ESPN College GameDay crew of Chris Fowler, Lee Corso and former Ohio State quarterback Kirk Herbstreit will be on campus all day on Saturday previewing games around the country. The GameDay program was originally supposed to be at the Louisiana State versus Auburn game in Auburn, Ala., but the threat from Hurricane Ivan called for it to switch locations, ESPN spokesman Mac Nwulu said.

YouVote encourages students to cast ballots

MSU's nonpartisan voter task force is beginning a late push to register students for the upcoming presidential election. YouVote began the first of its five residence hall voter registration drives Tuesday in Brody Hall, and will continue until Oct.

Study examines methods for safe sex, birth control

When deciding between using birth control pills or condoms to protect her during sex, Dina Tashjian, a pre-medical freshman, chooses both. "I'm not sleeping around, I have a boyfriend, but it seems safer - a double protection - to use condoms as well as pills," Tashjian said. According to a study, paid for in part by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, Tashjian is right to be careful.

Pre-trial date set for assault suspect

An MSU marketing freshman is in jail awaiting his pre-trial court date for allegedly raping a fellow student earlier this month. Travis Eichten was charged with one count of third degree criminal sexual conduct Tuesday, Ingham County Prosecutor Stuart Dunnings III said.

Police: Fans quiet during weekend home game

Fewer arrests and less noise highlighted the first home football game Saturday as fans seemed to celebrate in a more controlled fashion, city and university police said. This weekend, police officials say they are expecting an equally busy and longer game day when MSU plays Notre Dame at 7 p.m.

MIDDAY UPDATE: Emmons Hall revamps security

Emmons Hall residents are pulling their IDs out of their wallets more frequently this semester. When the students moved into their dorm rooms, they found themselves on the site of the first security improvements to a residence hall in more than 10 years. The hall is now equipped with several swipe-card machines on two exterior doors and all floor wing doors.

Time running out for drivers still owing money to state

For those caught driving without proof of auto insurance over the past year, deadlines to pay a $300 state bill are approaching. In the beginning of September, about 19,000 drivers received a bill for $300 from the Michigan's Department of Treasury under the Driver Responsibility Law passed last October.

Federal assault weapon ban expires after 10 years

Customers at Yvonne Joseph's gun shop can now purchase assault weapons equipped to hold larger amounts of bullets or that have mounted bayonets. As of Monday, Classic Arms Company, 1600 Lake Lansing Road, in Lansing, can stock its shelves with an array of gun types and accessories that have been banned for 10 years.
