Simon talks to new faculty

Provost and President-designate Lou Anna Simon spoke to new faculty today about MSU's future role with academics, the university's international impact and major institutional issues. Simon addressed about 100 incoming faculty at Kellogg Center as part of an orientation for new faculty. "We need to take a look at our circumstances and build a university people will be proud of 10 to 20 years from now," Simon said, adding that funding cuts are a major problem at MSU and other universities.

Police, officials stage emergency-response drill

MSU police and emergency responders swarmed the Center for Integrated Plant Systems building early Wednesday, during a drill that tested their ability to react to hazardous situations. The MSU police received a mock call at 8:12 a.m.

Venues offer discounts to lure students

With the year stacked full of theater productions, concerts and comedy shows to help entertain students, some venues are opening their box offices to pre-sales and discounts to help ease students' wallets as well as their minds. Tickets to see comedian Dave Chappelle or the Tony Award nominated production of "Oklahoma!" can usually cost about $100 a show, but with MSU student discounts and Wharton Center memberships, students will most likely save more than they spend. 'U' safeguards against risk

MSU police will conduct its second phase of emergency preparedness Wednesday morning during a full-scale mock disaster exercise on campus. Chevy Tahoes possible replacement for 'U' police squad's Ford vehicles

MSU police officers might be sporting new rides next year if a possible deal to replace their current squad cars with Chevy Tahoes is worked out. The current fleet of 13 marked Ford Crown Victorias, have leases that expire at the end of the year, would be replaced by the larger sport utility vehicles when they become available.
