Locals 'hang out' in tree-climbing classes

By Scott Atkinson Special for The State News The age-old adventure of climbing trees has been retooled for children in the Lansing area, with the addition of helmets, ropes and harnesses. The Harris Nature Center, 3998 Van Atta Road in Okemos, hosted a workshop in "technical tree climbing" Saturday, where they instructed participants on how to safely climb - and hang out in - large trees. Vertical Ventures Rock Climbing & Wilderness Programs, 843 Lantern Hill Drive, a company that teaches technical tree climbing, led the group through the woods of Okemos to their tree of preference - a tulip poplar with thick branches, which they estimated was more than 100 years old.

Student government leaders at MSU and Michigan's other 14 public universities hope they sent a strong, unified message to lawmakers Sunday: no military draft. Stanton emerges as Spartans' starting QB, but how long will he last?

So I'm sitting here watching Donovan McNabb make the Lions defensive line look stupid, and I'm thinking, "Wow, what a luxury to have a quarterback who can throw and run." There's even more proof on Detroit's next possession when Joey Harrington is scrambling from the Philadelphia defense and the ball just pops out of his hand - fumble-roosky. Two quick notes: I know I'm not the first person to bring this concept to light, and I'm not bashing Harrington, but he shouldn't be running with the ball-throw it away, Joey! Where's the relevance in all this, you ask?

Favorites separating from pretenders

This week's look at Heisman Trophy contenders is going to be a little different. Usually, The State News identifies three "Front runners" for the award and one "Dark horse." The favorites are typically made up of star players from major conference schools who were expected to compete for the Heisman. The "Dark horse," meanwhile, identifies a player not many thought would win the award.

Kicker falling short of expectations

Things could be worse for MSU senior place-kicker Dave Rayner. Had one of his missed field goals cost MSU a game, he could be among those college kickers whose flubs have made national headlines. Rayner admits he's not performing to his potential.

Scholastic mission

Jill Nichols never imagined she would spend the year after graduation teaching ethnically diverse inner-city Chicago children the wonders of an ecosystem. Nor did she think she would love it. "I didn't expect to get as attached to the students as I did," said Nichols, a 2003 MSU graduate.

Badgers look to defend home turf vs. JoePa

No. 20 Wisconsin vs. Penn State As the 11th team added to the Big Ten, Penn State head coach Joe Paterno and the Nittany Lions enter their eleventh season of conference play with a home game against Wisconsin in front of a national audience via ESPN and "College GameDay." Last season the Badgers won 30-23 on the road against Penn State - who recorded their worst season (3-9) last year. So far this fall, Penn State has rolled to a 2-1 record after defeating Central Florida and Akron, with a loss to Boston College. Senior quarterback Zack Mills has led the way for the Lions thus far by recording 591 yards passing with four touchdowns while also tallying a rushing touchdown and receiving touchdown as well. Wisconsin's last 4-0 start came in 2002, before the Badgers stumbled by losing three straight Big Ten games in October. Badgers sophomore running back Booker Stanley will once again have to fill the void in the ground game left by senior Anthony Davis' chronic ankle injury.
