Higher ed caters to casino careers

Students hoping to make a living while listening to the cha-ching of slot machines and the sounds of cards being shuffled now have a variety of educational options that would train them for a job in the casino industry. Because of an increased interest in gaming and casinos, officials at about seven universities nationwide say they are adding a host of casino classes and degrees to their course options in order to prepare students for a career near the craps table.

Groups map out barriers

An online map indicating the accessible areas on campus was completed last week and is due to be available on the MSU Web site this month. The map project was brought to Director of the Office of Affirmative Action, Compliance, and Monitoring Paulette Granberry Russell's attention last year by Council for Students with Disabilities members.

Prof spurs student, councilmember discussion

East Lansing officials and MSU students gathered in a classroom Monday to discuss the qualities of an ideal community. Family and child ecology Professor Rosemary Walker invited city officials to speak to her class in an effort to further communication between the two groups. East Lansing City Councilmember Beverly Baten led the four-person panel of city officials, which included East Lansing City Clerk Sharon Reid, Code Enforcement Specialist Bob Dutcher and parking and code enforcement Sgt.

MSU College of Law to host patent day

The MSU College of Law will host the 2004 Patent Law Day conference today. The conference is the beginning of a series of meetings and events organized throughout the year by the law college's Intellectual Property and Communications Law Program. The program was founded in 2003 and has since become a leading national program working on intellectual property rights and communications law issues. Conference speakers scheduled to appear include Judge Avern Cohn of the U.S.

Groups aim to unite students, defeat amendment

About a dozen students from MSU and the University of Michigan met in the Union Sunday for a student summit aimed at defeating the Michigan Marriage Amendment. Visitors from the Coalition for a Fair Michigan, the Triangle Foundation, Michigan Equality, the Ypsilanti Campaign for Equality and the Stonewall Democrats spoke to students about advocating against voting for the amendment. "This is the first statewide campaign that's ever happened in the state of Michigan that has to do with LBGT issues," said Ethan Roeder, field director for Coalition for a Fair Michigan.

Team claims second in tournament, Kent. 1st

The MSU men's golf team finished second at the 2004 Inverness Intercollegiate in Toledo, Ohio. The Spartans held a four-stroke lead entering Saturday's final round and shot a final round score of 304 for a three-round score of 885 (294-287-304). Kentucky took top honors with a three-round score of 877 (296-289-292). The team returns to action at the Central Regional Challenge, September 17-19 in South Bend, Ind.

Police reveal details of sexual assaults

MSU police released new information Friday on two Brody Complex sexual assaults, including one that occurred Friday morning in Butterfield Hall. A 20-year-old student living in Butterfield told police a stranger entered her room and assaulted her between 1:30 a.m.

Capital City Airport sets record for fliers

There seemed to be little fear of flying at Capital City Airport last month. The Lansing airport reached a record high in its total number of passengers during the month of August, with 67,580 outgoing and incoming passengers. The August total is the highest individual month of travel in the 75 years the airport has operated.
