A series of unrelated crimes occurred on campus last week, MSU police reported. The unusual thefts and arrests began Tuesday evening, when $8 of either bulk paper towels or toilet paper was stolen from the U.S.

Vaccine shortage forces Mich. to reduce supply

Healthy MSU students are being asked to grin and bear the flu this winter after a manufacturing glitch slashed Michigan's vaccine supply in half. Officials in the United Kingdom suspended the license of Chiron Corp., an influenza vaccine provider in Liverpool, England, for contamination issues still under investigation, the Food and Drug Administration said last week. Chiron was expected to supply 46 to 48 million doses of the 100 million that federal officials ordered following last year's unexpected flu surge.

'Twelfth Night' shines with strong acting

Many people know Shakespearean plays have successfully been set in places such as Britain, Denmark and Italy - but who would've thought in the Caribbean? For the same reasons people loved the creativity of last year's MSU Department of Theatre production "Lysistrata," people will love this year's "Twelfth Night." The production opened at Wharton Center's Pasant Theatre on Thursday with a beautiful purple-hued backdrop against black, cutout palm trees - the unique and eye-catching setting looked as if it were to house any story besides one from the 1600s. The story begins with a shipwreck off the coast of an unknown Caribbean island.

Spartans spread the wealth in victory

The trick play called for receiver Jerramy Scott to pass to quarterback Drew Stanton, and the defense was so fooled, both players knew there would be no excuse for failure. Scott, with the football in hand, after receiving a pitch from Stanton, saw his sophomore quarterback streaking toward the end zone, wide open.

Students question implementation of tailgate guidelines

Students expressed concern about how tailgate restrictions on drinking games and overcrowding at the Wilson tennis courts will be enforced. Concerned students spoke at a South Complex forum on Thursday to vent their frustrations and give suggestions to student leaders. The current ban includes beer bongs, roulette wheels, boards or tables to set up a table-top tennis game called "beer pong" and other accessories for drinking games.

Potter out in 7-2 win vs. Toronto

Senior forward Ash Goldie had a goal and two assists and senior forward Kevin Estrada had a goal and an assist to lead the MSU hockey team to a 7-2 victory over Toronto on Sunday at Munn Ice Arena. "Tonight, I thought two of our better forwards were Goldie and Estrada," MSU head coach Rick Comley said.

The sounds of laughter and joyous singing mixed with the footsteps of students dancing in celebration of Simchat Torah. The festivities took place in the basement of the Hillel Jewish Student Center Thursday night.

Mixed-view voter panel concurs Bush won 2nd round of debates

Although members of The State News debate panel said both President Bush and Sen. John Kerry raised their political games during the second presidential debate, reactions showed Bush held the upper hand in tickling the panel's funny bone. Chuckles and sighs escaped early as Bush said he had heard of rumors on the "Internets" about the reinstatement of a military draft.

Clutten finishes 4th representing S. Africa

Junior Ian Clutten, representing South Africa, finished fourth in the fourth heat of the 50-meter breaststroke and finished 22nd overall during the FINA Short Course World Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. The time, however, did not qualify Clutten for the semifinal round.

MIDDAY UPDATE: Commission member tries to include greek houses in historic district

Throughout years of fall recruitment, parties and greek living, fraternity and sorority houses have been a part of the East Lansing community, and Richard Wright wants it to remain that way. Wright, a member of the East Lansing Historic District Commission, is trying to gather a study group to determine which greek houses should be included in an historic preservation district.

E.L. police report few arrests; partyers move off campus

Early Saturday morning, students continued to spin the wheel of drinking fortune and bounce ping-pong balls into plastic beer cups. But they had to cross Grand River Avenue to do it. After MSU officials prohibited drinking games on campus, the tennis courts were noticeably quieter as students took their parties to the lawns of East Lansing.
