A blue denim slip-covered couch accompanied by three seats - two red and orange dotted dish chairs and one black and purple shoe-shaped chair - fill the living room of a West Akers Hall suite. When you look at a score sheet from an MSU men's soccer game, it's strange when you don't see the names of three players - senior midfielders John Minagawa-Webster and Jordan Gruber and junior forward Ryan McMahen.

All right. We aren't going to get into the middle of sports' greatest rivalry. We aren't even located anywhere near Boston or New York, and there are maybe two staff members here that were born or raised on the East Coast.

Outside of their respective courthouses, Laura Moody and Stuart Dunnings III both said their pastimes are "being a parent." Moody, 35, works for the Attorney General during the day, and spends the rest of her time playing with her three children.

As the MSU volleyball team (6-10 overall, 1-7 Big Ten) returns home to battle Wisconsin and Northwestern this weekend, it isn't focusing on winning and losing, head coach Chuck Erbe said. "We're not measuring our victories in wins and losses," Erbe said.

Urban planner Tim Dempsey spends his days in an East Lansing City Hall office creating a vision for the world around him. Ironically, he doesn't have any windows to see his ideas take shape. But the maps that plaster his walls are a two-dimensional reminder of the future he is helping to frame for this college town. Dempsey was brought to East Lansing at a time when the city is preparing to tackle several major redevelopment projects including a 35-acre East Village revamp - which will significantly alter the scope of the area.

Men's hoops tickets to be distributed Nov. 7

Tickets for the 2004-05 men's basketball season will be handed out at 9 p.m. on Nov. 7 at Breslin Center, instead of Sunday. Student season tickets in a limited number ($138 for a 12-game package) can still be purchased at Jenison Field House in person or by calling the MSU Athletic Ticket Office at (517) 355-1610.

Green and White game to take place Nov. 6

The MSU men's basketball team will hold its Green and White game on Nov. 6 at Breslin Center. Admission to the game is free, and the time of the event will be determined after the time for the MSU and Ohio State football game has been announced. The team's next competition will be the first of two exhibitions held on Nov.

Comley returns for 2nd homecoming

It will be MSU head coach Rick Comley's second homecoming when he returns to Marquette to play the team that he started - Northern Michigan. MSU plays Friday and Saturday at 7:35 p.m. "There's always a nervousness that goes with it," Comley said.

Candidate criticizes 'U' decisions

Adamantly against closed meetings and MSU President M. Peter McPherson's involvement in what he calls an "illegal war in Iraq," Ben Burgis said he shares his views with a large number of students and staff who are "pissed off" at university officials. Burgis, 24, of East Lansing, said he would be a voice for those disgruntled constituents if he were elected into one of the two open seats on the MSU Board of Trustees.

It's ironic that Ralph Nader calls Michael Moore a turncoat when he wouldn't be on the ballot in most states without the signatures of local Republicans. Nader is like a tragic Greek hero, a good man flawed by his arrogance.

Columbus Day not worthy of protest

I recently read a story in your paper ('"U' celebrate heritage"" SN 10/12) about the people at the North American Indigenous Student Organization and how they protested Columbus Day due to Christopher Columbus' greed, thirst for power and complete mistreatment of American Indians. First of all, I agree with you that Columbus was looking for fame and fortune and didn't care how he achieved it. But, you must realize this was more than 500 years ago.

WEB ONLY: Local temple celebrates Hindu holiday

Worshippers celebrated the Hindu holiday Navaratra Dashara by praising the goddesses Durga and Saraswati with spiritual dancing and songs Thursday at the Bharatiya Temple of Lansing, 955 Haslett Road. "The holiday is recognized to represent the power of femininity," said participant and temple member Dr. Sripada Raju. Worshippers celebrated Durga's victory over evil with spiritual dance and songs. One MSU student celebrated by fasting. "It helped me focus," mathematics senior Tejal Patel said.

Campaign representatives and local experts say the final 11 days before the election provide plenty of time to persuade undecided voters. Polls show hundreds of thousands of voters are undecided this close to the Nov.
