Lawyers called for backup in case of recount

With the presidential election eight days away, campaign representatives are preparing for a possible recount after the 2000 debacle that kept Americans guessing the winner for weeks. Although officials say they aren't planning on another recount, they already are calling on thousands of lawyers to help out in possible courtroom battles. Nationwide polls show a dead heat in many of the battleground states, including Florida, Michigan and Ohio.

If a manufactured pop star's career takes a nose-dive in the middle of the forest, will anyone hear it, or much less care? It was a shame to watch Saturday Night Live this weekend and see someone who proclaims to be a singer miming on a live show.

Event examines Latino identity

Criticism about the rate of Chicano and Latino assimilation was one of the main focuses of a regional Chicano conference held at the Union this weekend. The event was held by the Midwest FOCO chapter of the National Association for Chicana and Chicano Studies.

MIDDAY UPDATE: On-air comments about sexual assaults spur discussion

Comments made on a local radio station morning show about the recent sexual assault cases on campus brought to light issues on how sexual assaults are viewed in the public. The radio station, WVIC (94.1-FM) in Lansing, aired comments made by two part-time substitute morning hosts regarding the sexual assault situation on MSU's campus.

Spikers finally record win

The MSU volleyball team was swept by Wisconsin on Friday before turning around Saturday and defeating Northwestern in three of four games. "We bent, but we didn't break," head coach Chuck Erbe said, referring to the fourth game on Saturday and the final game of the weekend.

Marquette - It was a struggle all weekend for the MSU hockey team as the Spartans limped through a sweep at the hands of Northern Michigan.

Usability conference to be held on campus

MSU will host the second annual Usability and Accessibility Conference on Tuesday and Wednesday at Kellogg Center. The two-day event will feature industry and academic leaders discussing usability and accessibility principles, research findings, policy, design, methods and tools in relation to human-computer interaction. Conference attendees are invited to celebrate the grand opening of the MSU Usability and Accessibility Center, which will be open for tours and information-sharing. The facility will be used for conducting research and usability testing, as well as for education and consulting services on accessibility.

'U' hockey team falls to Northern

Marquette - It was another tough Friday night game for the MSU hockey team (1-2-0) as they were once again unable to overcome a tough goaltender in the final minutes. The Spartans fell to the Northern Michigan Wildcats (2-1-0), 3-2, in front of a near-sellout crowd of 3,814 at the Berry Events Center.

Campaign representatives and local experts say the final 11 days before the election provide plenty of time to persuade undecided voters. Polls show hundreds of thousands of voters are undecided this close to the Nov.

WEB ONLY: Local temple celebrates Hindu holiday

Worshippers celebrated the Hindu holiday Navaratra Dashara by praising the goddesses Durga and Saraswati with spiritual dancing and songs Thursday at the Bharatiya Temple of Lansing, 955 Haslett Road. "The holiday is recognized to represent the power of femininity," said participant and temple member Dr. Sripada Raju. Worshippers celebrated Durga's victory over evil with spiritual dance and songs. One MSU student celebrated by fasting. "It helped me focus," mathematics senior Tejal Patel said.

Columbus Day not worthy of protest

I recently read a story in your paper ('"U' celebrate heritage"" SN 10/12) about the people at the North American Indigenous Student Organization and how they protested Columbus Day due to Christopher Columbus' greed, thirst for power and complete mistreatment of American Indians. First of all, I agree with you that Columbus was looking for fame and fortune and didn't care how he achieved it. But, you must realize this was more than 500 years ago.

Nader, not Moore, is real 'turncoat'

It's ironic that Ralph Nader calls Michael Moore a turncoat when he wouldn't be on the ballot in most states without the signatures of local Republicans. Nader is like a tragic Greek hero, a good man flawed by his arrogance.

Candidate criticizes 'U' decisions

Adamantly against closed meetings and MSU President M. Peter McPherson's involvement in what he calls an "illegal war in Iraq," Ben Burgis said he shares his views with a large number of students and staff who are "pissed off" at university officials. Burgis, 24, of East Lansing, said he would be a voice for those disgruntled constituents if he were elected into one of the two open seats on the MSU Board of Trustees.
