Full steam ahead for Izzo & Co.

Were you disappointed by Saturday's basketball result? I mean, the Spartans only scored 102 points - two under their season average. What happened to the offensive juggernaut we saw in MSU's first two games when the Green and White put up 104 points against Florida A&M and Wisconsin-Green Bay? The Spartans had six players scoring in double figures against the Rattlers and Phoenix, but only five against the Nicholls State Colonels. No Spartans team has ever eclipsed the century mark more than once in a season before, much less three times, consecutively.

IBM program to aid research

As a computer sits unused in a dorm room or office, a free program available online can contribute the idle energy to research for cures for diseases such as tuberculosis. IBM has unveiled the World Community Grid, a program designed to cut down on research time and increase cost-effectiveness for the companies who sponsor the projects, IBM spokeswoman Catherine Collins said, adding that anyone with access to the Internet can download the program into their computer. "The more people we get signed up for this, the more research we can get done," Collins said. Collins said because of the amount of computers at a university, MSU is an ideal place to implement the program.

'U' destroys Nicholls State, 102-52

The No. 10 MSU basketball team won its third straight game to start the 2004-05 season, in 102-52 blow out of Nicholls State at the Breslin Center on Saturday. But it wasn't pretty. "I did not like the way that the team played, to tell you the truth," head coach Tom Izzo said. The Spartans (3-0) were only up by 12 points with 9:28 left in the first half and clearly did not look like the team that had blown out Wisconsin-Green Bay just four days earlier. MSU turned the ball over 16 times and looked sloppy on numerous occasions, leaving a sour taste in their mouths, despite the 50 point victory. "The seniors were talking about it and we know that if we go out and play like we did today, on Tuesday, we're not going to have a chance," senior guard Chris Hill said.

Parents act pushy in students' lives

As president of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, I am concerned that students are allowing their parents to play too much of a role in their decision making. Many students I have encountered have a strong interest in joining the greek community, but when Rush Week comes to an end and they have to talk to their parents, they are hitting a brick wall.

Weekend snow could create chores for 'U'

East Lansing officials are reminding residents that all sidewalks adjacent to their property must remain clear of snow and ice. The city will no longer issue warnings, but will immediately issue a ticket for failures to clear snow and ice. Owners or occupants of East Lansing residences must remove the snow and ice within 24 hours of snowfall and must use salt or another abrasive material on icy sidewalks within 12 hours of ice forming. East Lansing employees will open highly traveled main sidewalks so it is easier for residents to plow or shovel.

Up to moral voters to halt arguments

As an individual who voted for John Kerry in the past election, I - along with many Bush supporters - am growing tired of Democrats who appear to whine about the results and treat their political defeat as what George Will in Newsweek called an "affirmation of intellectual and moral superiority." However, I am equally tired of Republicans telling us to get over it and move on.

Beanie Babies, breath mints and lip balm will soon be making their way to military troops overseas. The items are included on a list of possible donations from Emmons Hall residents who are participating in Operation Gratitude, a national organization that has sent more than 36,800 care packages to soldiers stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Kosovo and the Korean peninsula. Meggan Willersdorf, the assistant director for Emmons Hall, said she found the program on a Web site and thought it was a great idea. "It gives residents an opportunity to volunteer - to give their time and effort," she said.
