Distributing ASMSU funds is misplaced

This is in response to Tim Phelps' letter, "Distribute ASMSU's funding to students" (SN 11/30), regarding the $600,000 that ASMSU is "sitting" on. First of all, I am all in favor of receiving money, always.

Team optimistic for next season; Schram, Griffin garner honors

As the MSU volleyball team bids farewell to its seniors and to one of its toughest seasons in a decade, the remaining Spartans are looking ahead with a hopeful eye for next year. "We've got a lot of work to do," head coach Chuck Erbe said, following the final match against Ohio State, a 3-0 loss Saturday. "So to speak, we need to put Humpty Dumpty back together again," he said. The team (12-16 overall, 7-13 Big Ten) struggled this season following the loss of junior middle Megan Wallin, who has been out since tearing the ACL in her right knee during the first conference match of the season. The team battled through leadership and rotation problems the first half of the season but were able to turn the second half of the season, in part, around - even considering NCAA Tournament goals. MSU finished eighth in the Big Ten and did not earn a tournament bid for the first time in 10 years.

Senate delays bill to allow state pipeline veto

The same day Rep. Michael Murphy, D-Lansing, held a town meeting to oppose a proposed gas pipeline running through Lansing, state senators announced they will not consider a related bill this year. Last month, the House passed a bill that would give the state government the power to decide if utility pipelines pass through city property on state-owned property.

Disagreeing with government is key

Regarding Tim Phelps' request to return the $600,000 risk management fund to students in his letter, "Distribute ASMSU's funding to students," (SN 11/30) I would note that students can obtain a refund of their ASMSU tax ($13.75) - thereby making the suggested distribution unnecessary. Also, there already has been call within the assembly to drain the fund, using the money for what it was originally intended: Students.

Free for all

For many people, the holiday season can be a time when extra cash is hard to come by. A need to purchase gifts and update winter wardrobes can leave students at a loss when it comes time to enjoy some of life's extras or even some of its necessities.

Anti-1980s column left out notables

This is in response to Mike Townshend's opinion column "Pop culture icons from 1980s prove it was disposable decade," (SN 11/29). Although Mr. T has some good points, I suggest he not draw all his conclusions about that dark time in history from "American Psycho" and VH1. First of all, in the realm of pop cinema, the '80s gave us really innovative science fiction, fantasy and children's films. Also, it gave the prototype for today's blockbuster.
