Spartans face Tulsa in NCAA tourney at Okla.

The MSU men's soccer team will travel to Tulsa for the opening round of the NCAA Tournament after coming off a stellar performance in the Big Ten Tournament. The Spartans (12-6-1) played solid defense en route to their first ever Big Ten Tournament Championship giving up just one goal in the three games they played in Ann Arbor last weekend. The Spartans will meet the Golden Hurricanes (10-6-3) for the first time in school history.

The total package

First you crawl, then you walk, then you run. Right now, MSU's offense is running. It has become a complete package that attacks defenses through the air and on the ground. That is a turnaround from last season, when the offense was more one-dimensional, usually beating defenses with the pass. There are varying explanations for the staggering potency of MSU's offense lately.

COMMENTARY

Local authorities should relax MIPs

East Lansing and MSU police have become crazy with the number of minor in possession tickets they are willing to distribute when there are many other problems they could focus on. Police around campus want to blame drinking as the problem for numerous crimes committed on or near campus.

Practice of pardoning White House's Thanksgiving turkey must end

There is no practice more inane, no tradition more vapid and no photo opportunity more whorish than the annual Thanksgiving "pardoning" of the White House turkey. Each Thanksgiving since the days of Harry Truman, the president "pardons" a turkey to a presumably pastoral life of pecking at the ground and looking at things around the farm or forest that move.

COMMENTARY

Most sports fans need manners class

This is in regards to the University of Wisconsin junior's comments regarding fan behavior in Spartan Stadium. I don't condone rude behavior at football games by adults or students.

WEB ONLY: Wanderjahr releases first full album to rave review

Get past their name because once Wanderjahr - which I still don't know how to pronounce - enters the music-loving sector of your ears, it'll become obvious that names are just a tag, and what is heard behind the group's title is all that matters. Wanderjahr - a local psychedelic rock group comprised of five gentlemen - has been around the East Lansing and Lansing music scene for seven years, and are now releasing their first "proper" album, "Is to Disappear," tonight at The Temple Club, 500 E.

Authors discuss 9-11 coverage

As they watched the television coverage of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Mary Carouba and Susan Hagen noticed one thing - women were not included. "We reverted back to the language of the '60s," Carouba said.

Spartans hockey loses to No. 2 U-M, 4-2

No. 2 Michigan took advantage of some sloppy No. 14 MSU plays that turned into a 4-2 Wolverines win on Thursday night in front of an over-capacity crowd of 6,607 at Munn Ice Arena. "It was the difference in the hockey game," MSU head coach Rick Comley said of the team's turnovers.

COMMENTARY

Column writing has responsibility to it

I have to be honest; I wasn't pleased after reading Lindsey Anderson's column ("Thank you, supporters of President Bush, for four years of tyranny" SN 11/16). The bottom line is that even though this is an opinion article on the editorial page, it is not right to insinuate that 51 million Americans are stupid.

Usual suspects still in hunt

Oklahoma freshman running back Adrian Peterson is about to learn a hard lesson: To win a Heisman Trophy, you must be healthy enough to put up good numbers the whole season.

Michigan youth attend government sessions

Nearly 400 middle school students from 19 schools throughout the state are expected to participate in the second annual session of Michigan Youth in Government that will begin this weekend. The statewide program is an expansion of the Youth in Government program for high school students.

The mission of the U.S. Constitution is to enumerate and protect the rights of Americans and to provide a loose framework of ideas open to interpretation and modification.

COMMENTARY

Liberal education needed for personal, professional enrichment

Hey, American Dream-totin', rigid-as-hell parents - listen up. Same to you, money-calculatin', class-resentin' college students who have been filled up with the "get a good money job" mantra by the first group. You're missing the ball if you don't care for the value of liberal education.

COMMENTARY

Back it up

Nicolette Sheridan has every right to be upset about ABC's apology for running an allegedly racy introduction to "Monday Night Football." One of Janet Jackson's breasts was worth $550,000 - presumably more than a cool $1 million for the pair - but Sheridan's bare back could only be worth $32,500, max. In what can only be considered an attempt at inflicting pre-color "Pleasantville" morals on America, the Federal Communications Commission has again declared indecency where there is none to be found.

COMMENTARY

Don't generalize Bush supporters

You're welcome, Lindsey K. Anderson. I am one of the 51 percent of Americans who voted to re-elect President Bush. However, I am a pro-environment, anti-capital punishment, free-thinking Catholic conservative.
