Horse exhibition ropes 'em in

Horse owners and enthusiasts packed MSU's campus this weekend to see the largest equine show in the state. The 22nd annual International Stallion Exhibition and Trade Show, sponsored by the Michigan Horse Council, was held Friday through Sunday at the Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education. "People who are coming through a long winter before riding season starts know they can come here to get the things they need," said Marilyn Graff, spokeswoman for the exhibition and trade show and member of the Michigan Horse Council.

Nick Simmons named Big Ten champ

Nick Simmons won his first Big Ten Championship, and four Spartans qualified for the NCAA Championships on March 5-6 at the Big Ten Championships in Iowa City, Iowa. MSU finished eighth out of the 11 Big Ten schools, and Illinois won its first Big Ten Championship since 1952. At the NCAA Championships starting Thursday, Simmons will be joined by his brother, sophomore Andy Simmons, and juniors Darren McKnight and R.J.

MSU grad killed by bomb in Iraq war

Army Capt. Sean Grimes, a 1997 MSU graduate, was killed by a roadside bomb March 4 while serving in Iraq. Grimes was a physician's assistant and served in the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, part of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, which supports the 1st Marine Division in Iraq.

Circuit court reverses E.L. speed limit change

The city of East Lansing was successful last week in pressuring state officials to return speed limits along Grand River Avenue and Saginaw Highway to their original speeds. The Michigan Department of Transportation, or MDOT, along with the Michigan State Police and State Transportation Commission raised area speed limits by 10 mph nearly a month ago after conducting traffic studies for about a year. East Lansing officials, angered by the state's decision, took the three agencies to court.

Missed free throws hurt Spartans in upset loss versus Iowa

Chicago - He came into the game shooting almost 90 percent from the free-throw line. He had missed just 10 free throws all year coming into the game. But in 40 minutes of playing time, MSU senior swingman Alan Anderson missed five free throws, including two crucial misses with 6.5 seconds left in the game that gave Iowa a 71-69 win in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal game Friday at the United Center. For the game, MSU shot 15-for-30 from the charity stripe. "Never would I have thought we would shoot 50 percent from the free-throw line," Anderson said.

MSU official receives Child Advocate Award

Assistant provost for university outreach and engagement, Hiram Fitzgerald, received the 2005 Child Advocate Award from the Michigan Fatherhood Coalition at the annual conference for the Michigan Head Start Association Inc. After studying fathers' roles for the past eight years, as part of a national research consortium evaluating Early Head Start programs, Fitzgerald was recognized for his work to raise awareness of the roles fathers play in their children's lives.

Indianapolis - In a season of firsts, the No. 8 MSU women's basketball team accomplished one more thing for the first time - winning the Big Ten Tournament Championship. The Spartans (28-3 overall, 14-2 Big Ten) won the game 55-49 behind strong defense and solid leadership down the stretch.

ONLINE UPDATE: Seniors bid farewell to Breslin

It began more than four years ago with an 80-70 victory against University of Detroit-Mercy. And it ended with a few kisses to the court which had become their second home. MSU\'s five seniors said farewell to Breslin Center on Saturday night in grand fashion in the Spartan\'s 90-64 victory over Penn State. But for some, it wasn\'t easy saying good-bye. \"It was just a rough moment for us knowing that it\'s our last time being out there playing in front of this crowd and being in front of the Izzone,\" senior guard Kelvin Torbert said.

It was an emotional farewell for MSU's five seniors Saturday night at Breslin Center. After four years of hard work, the quintet - Alan Anderson, Tim Bograkos, Andy Harvey, Chris Hill and Kelvin Torbert - were finally in the starting lineup together for the Spartans' 90-64 win over Penn State. "You're going to lose guys who have been through a lot with you," MSU head coach Tom Izzo said.

ONLINE UPDATE: Spartans beat Penn State, 83-76; women's team heads to championship round

Indianapolis - On a day when defense was not really present, it was important that the No. 8 MSU women's basketball team got production out of their offense, and that was just what they did in their 83-76 win against Penn State. The Spartans (27-3 overall, 14-2 Big Ten) hit 56 percent of their shots for the game and Penn State (19-10, 13-3) was able to hit 53.6 percent of their shots in a game where the defense was, for the most part, nonexistent. "It was a very strong offensive game and a very good game by both teams," MSU head coach Joanne P.
