Seniors' legacy lives on

On the eve of what could have been history for the MSU women's basketball team, I sat and thought about two things. First, is how everyone had doubted this team from the outset and still doubts this team's ability to get things done in crunch time. The only thing anyone needs to look at is what happened in the national semifinal game against powerhouse Tennessee.

Critical alumni were not here Saturday

According to East Lansing ordinances, "assembling or acting with four or more other people for the purpose of engaging in a riot, or being nearby and remaining there with intent to riot, is illegal" ("Experts: Police used tear gas legally" SN 4/5). Unfortunately, the police got to decide if my intent was to riot, when it actually was showing MSU spirit and navigating the maze of blocked-off streets to get home. Can I make assumptions, too, and say the four or more officers assembled outside on Saturday were intending to riot?

Board to decide on alcohol-ban rules

Exceptions to the ban on open alcohol on campus could include home football games and other events approved by the university, members of the MSU Board of Trustees have said. While preventing the consumption or possession of an open container of alcohol anywhere on campus at any time, exceptions would be granted to allow alcohol on campus during tailgating and other events that must be approved by the board secretary. Guidelines for the ban have been developed through meetings with members of the MSU community and will be up for approval at Friday's MSU Board of Trustees meeting.

Spartans spirit

Business freshman Rob Trufant and business and pre-law freshman Eric Lubanski led a group of young Spartans fans in cheers Tuesday night for the MSU women's basketball team, as it vied for the NCAA Championship. "You gotta start them young," Trufant said.

ELPD made up of 'anti-youth thugs'

MSU plays in the Final Four and people celebrate, but then cops attack. Just as they've always been, the East Lansing Police Department and other local cops are still anti-student, anti-youth thugs.

Wrong move

It's apparent no East Lansing City Council members were around to personally witness the tear gas attacks police officers launched against peacefully celebrating students following the MSU men's basketball team's loss to the University of North Carolina on Saturday.

Library, stores offer special pope collections

Sitting on a shelf near the check-out corner of the East Lansing Public Library, a collection of books about the late Pope John Paul II are flying off the racks. From titles such as "In the Vatican" to "The private prayers of Pope John Paul II," the publications offer a wide variety of information to readers on the life of an influential public figure. "One of the services we offer to the community is to highlight current events and library materials that relate to those current events," said Laurie St.

Food contaminated by gas should be tossed

Any food sitting out that might have been contaminated by tear gas on Saturday night should be thrown out, said Dean Sienko, medical director of the Ingham County Health Department. Thousands of students took to the streets of East Lansing after the men's basketball team's loss to the University of North Carolina on Saturday.

The city of East Lansing will operate with about $523,000 less than last year, according to the city's fiscal year 2006 budget and program of services. The city's total budget for 2006 is about $55 million, about 2.3 percent less than last year.

Spartans' season full of achievements

They may have lost to Baylor, and they didn't bring home the title, but regardless of the big game, this year's team had more accomplishments than any women'sbasketball team in MSU history. MSU women's basketball team school records: • 17 straight victories to finish the season • First appearance in an NCAA Championship • Tied a women's Final Four record by overcoming a 16-point deficit to beat Tennessee in the semifinals • 2005 marks the first time in Big Ten history that the conference has had a team in the title games for the men and women • MSU has 13 wins over ranked opponents this season • First Big Ten championship • First Big Ten Tournament championship. • This is the first time MSU has reached 30 victories in a season, breaking its previous best record by 10 wins • MSU's senior class is the winningest class in school history, winning 91 during its four seasons.

Dream over

Indianapolis - A dream season came to a tough end Tuesday night as the No. 1 seed MSU women's basketball team came up short against No.

E.L. chief requests images of disturbances

East Lansing police Chief Louis Muhn said on Tuesday that he wants to review any tapes or evidence that police acted inappropriately Saturday night when dispersing crowds, in what the city is now calling a riot. At least dozens of students and fans who were in downtown or the Cedar Village area after the men's basketball team's loss to North Carolina documented the night's events with camera cell phones, still cameras and video cameras. Some images and videos posted by students or others on Web sites this week have shown individuals or small groups of people being pepper-sprayed in the face by police in close proximity.

Students must speak out against Saturday's unjustified, unfair events

As I sit down to think and write about Saturday night's events, the familiar lines of the Creedence Clearwater Revival song "Who'll Stop the Rain?" keep replaying in my mind. Frontman John Fogerty's line, "Clouds of mystery pourin'/Confusion on the ground," typify the experiences of soldiers who went to war in Vietnam and faced enemies they couldn't find and gases they didn't understand.

Top city officials absent for melee

Several top East Lansing officials were out of town this weekend when thousands of MSU students and fans filled city streets, and were then dispersed by police teams releasing tear gas throughout downtown and the Cedar Village area. Mayor Mark Meadows, Mayor Pro Tem Sam Singh and City Manager Ted Staton each said they were out of town for personal reasons.
