"It's kind of ridiculous because I know a lot of people who do it," education freshman Colleen Goergen said.

Budget could hurt book collection

The East Lansing Public Library could operate with 5,000 fewer books in the next fiscal year if the City Council approves a budget that slashes funding by $50,000. The funds necessary to purchase books are at risk to be cut by nearly one third, said Sylvia Marabate, director of the East Lansing Public Library, 950 Abbott Road, adding the institution normally purchases about 15,000 books a year. "We will work hard to meet our community's expectations, but it may mean some have to wait a little longer for the bestsellers," she said.

Forward Colton Fretter and defensemen Jared Nightingale and Corey Potter will serve as assistants to Miller.

Police, officials still unclear about melee details

A week and a half after the April 2-3 disturbances in East Lansing following the men's basketball team's Final Four appearance, officials still are unclear about the specifics of what happened that night. The number of chemical munitions used or officers trained to use tear gas who were available that evening is unclear, as well as the total cost of damage. The city has termed the events a riot based on the legal definition, and the university has used multiple terms. MSU President Lou Anna K.

'Orphan Train' recruits children for majority of roles

Finding children to participate in on-campus productions can be difficult because of scheduling, hyperactivity and, well, a lack of children on a college campus. But these factors didn't hinder Bill Gordon's plan to direct "The Orphan Train," a play that follows the relocation of 15 parentless children from the East Coast to the Midwest. Gordon is a theater graduate student with an emphasis in directing and youth theater and said this student production was a great opportunity for him to combine his different interests into one play. The adult to children ratio is 7 to 15, but actor Tommy Sklut, a music education freshman, said having the younger crowd brought life back to theater. "To help these kids turn what can be this hard acting part into something that's believable and meaningful to people was amazing," Sklut said.

Caught on record

During the April 2-3 disturbances students armed with camcorders, camera phones and digital cameras captured the action on record. In the police-estimated crowd of nearly 3,000 that gathered on April 2 in Cedar Village celebrating the men's basketball team, it wasn't difficult to spot small red dots and outstretched hands.

MIDDAY UPDATE: 'Daily Show' visits local senator

Comedy Central's "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" overran state Sen. Virg Bernero's office Wednesday afternoon, prying and jesting him with questions about a privacy bill he introduced in the Michigan Senate earlier that day. Daily Show "correspondent" Samantha Bee served up the show's usual bantering style with quick quips and mockery aimed at the senator, who said he has only seen the work of the show's main anchor Jon Stewart - not any of the sometimes-satirical correspondent stories. "If it makes me look foolish or whatever, I can live with it," Bernero, D-Lansing, told The State News in his office Wednesday.
