Students displayed 'animal' behavior

During the riots after the April 2 men's basketball game, I was out on the streets. I passed many cops, and I got teargassed twice, but never did I see any actions that deserved the current whining that many students have brought down upon the police forces involved.

Trustees' secretary to resign on July 1

The MSU official responsible for enforcing exceptions to the open-alcohol ban and leading the discussion to change tailgating on campus will leave her administrative post this summer to pursue a more spiritual direction. Sue Carter will step down as secretary of the MSU Board of Trustees and as executive assistant to MSU President Lou Anna K.

Speech to focus on MSU experience

After cramming for one last final, stealing one last apple from the cafeteria and listening to the Beaumont Tower's Carillon one more time, Shannon Houghton will share her MSU experiences with the senior class of 2005 at the undergraduate commencement ceremony. The Senior Class Council selected Houghton in mid-April to be this year's spring speaker.

Lawyers prepare for melee pretrials

As some of the 43 people arrested during the April 2-3 disturbances face pretrial conferences this week, lawyers are doing their homework and looking at the event to prepare for their cases. The charges range from disorderly assembly for riot, preparation to burn and obstructing a police officer in the cases stemming from the disturbances after the men's basketball team's loss to North Carolina in the Final Four. During a pretrial, both sides meet to discuss if the case will go to trial or if there will be a guilty plea. Evidence at the trials will be presented in the form of video and testimony from police officers who can describe the conduct of the crowd, said Tom Yeadon, assistant city attorney. Yeadon said the city is viewing the cases as a way to prevent future incidences.

Greek Week results in 140K for charity

By Jonathan Junia Special for The State News In the Auditorium on Saturday there were zombies fighting nerds, aliens fighting cowboys and devils fighting angels, in addition to mock appearances by Will Smith, John Travolta, the Blues Brothers, James Bond and a giant chicken. They were all there for Songfest, the biggest and last event of Greek Week - a week devoted to celebrating sororities and fraternities and raising money for local charities.

Suspect sweep

More than 10,000 fugitives were captured last week in Operation FALCON, an intensive, national operation that combined efforts of federal, state and local authorities. The operation lasted from April 4-10 and focused on apprehending suspects wanted in homicides, sexual assaults, gang-related crimes, kidnappings, major drug offenses and crimes against children and the elderly. Such a large and successful effort is undeniably impressive.

Star-studded event

The last thing on the minds of MSU hockey alumni and professional players that took part in the "Hockey for Hope" all-star charity contest on Saturday at Munn Ice Arena was the final score of the game and the NHL lockout. "Everybody's been disappointed for so long about the NHL," said Kevin Miller, a former MSU star (1984-88) and event organizer.

After following the stories in The State News over the past few years, it is becoming more and more apparent that the city of East Lansing, and the greater Lansing area would be happy if MSU was not a part of their community.

Students build Habitat home

It's not much of a house to look at now, but soon it will be a home. Students from the MSU Habitat for Humanity chapter rolled up their sleeves this weekend to put the finishing touches on a house at 2509 Poplar St.

A home run by MSU sophomore first baseman Sean Walker and a grand slam in the ninth inning that tied the game were not good enough, as the Spartans lost at Ohio State, 8-7. Walker's home run in the seventh inning cut the Spartans' deficit to 7-3.

Kristin Haynie is moving to California. The MSU point guard, who led the Spartans to the women's NCAA championship game, was drafted ninth overall on Saturday by the WNBA's Sacramento Monarchs. Haynie and MSU head coach Joanne P.

Sparty's party offers music, giveaways

Doing cartwheels and dancing to rock music projected from a concert stage, 8-year-old Abby Mealy, of Okemos, couldn't stand still as she waited in line with her 5-year-old sister Amanda for a ride on the Ferris wheel at Demonstration Field on Saturday. From the top of the ride, Abby leaned forward in her seat to look at the activities going on at the fourth Sparty's Spring Party, which was sponsored by the University Activities Board, or UAB. "I like going fast, and I could see everything," Abby said.
