Filmmaker shares thoughts on culture

Documentary filmmaker Ken Burns said his films have a running subplot of race, but his main focus in creating them is to remind people of how history and culture unite us. Burns drew from his experiences making documentaries in two campus addresses on Monday. "We live in a society where everything is divided," he said.

Views on fire safety differ for officials, students

Every month, an alarm blares throughout the residence halls - another fire drill. But following Friday's fire at Bryan Hall, several students said they first thought alarms were only signaling a fire drill, and the majority of the residents were in no hurry to exit the building. Many students only knew it was a real fire once they saw the smoke rising from a third-floor window. "They think they are invulnerable, and therefore 'It's not going to happen to me,' but it does happen," said Paul Goldblatt, director of Residence Life.

In response to Lindsey Poisson's "Totally Takeout should offer more selection, higher quality food" (SN 10/7), instead of complaining that not every Totally Takeout carries your pickles, I suggest you learn to feed yourself.

Men's tennis plays well during weekend

The MSU men's tennis team recorded wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles' matches in the Spartan Invitational while also getting the victory in two of the three doubles matches against Western Michigan on Sunday. MSU sophomores Nick Rinks and Adam Monich each went 3-0 in singles' play during the weekend and also partnered to go 4-0 in doubles' play. The junior duo of Michael Flowers and Joseph McWilliams recorded the other MSU doubles victory.

Water Carnival's revival draws hundreds

MSU alumni crowded around the Red Cedar River on Friday evening to witness the return of Water Carnival after a 36-year absence. What they saw in a roughly hour-long procession of 18 floats was a departure from the extravagant tradition many of them remembered. The chilly October weather gusted wind and mists of rain on the hundreds who attended Friday's event.

At 17 years old, Carol Jacobsen was a pregnant newlywed, scared for her life. "I was only married three months and it became very violent, very quickly," Jacobsen said.

Icers win tournament to open up season

The MSU hockey team won the Lefty McFadden Tournament, sweeping Wayne State on Saturday and North Dakota, the 2005 national runner-up, on Sunday in Dayton, Ohio. MSU sophomore forward Bryan Lerg (four points), senior forward David Booth (three) and junior defenseman Tyler Howells (two) were named to the all-tournament team. Sophomore forward Chris Mueller recorded two goals against the Fighting Sioux, and junior goaltender Dominic Vicari recorded the shutout with 25 saves in the 3-0 victory.

The stop-motion animation is astounding. The plot is refreshingly cute. The first feature-length film starring the British claymation chums "Wallace & Gromit" in "The Curse of the Were-Rabbit," is a cheeky comedy, innocent enough for the whole family.

Just for kicks

The MSU women's soccer team extended its winning streak to three games on Sunday by defeating Northwestern 2-1 at Old College Field. Despite being winless in the conference, the Wildcats presented problems for the Spartans throughout the game. "Northwestern is an excellent team - there's no way they should be struggling in the Big Ten," head coach Tom Saxton said.

Alumnus new director of experiment station

The Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station recently named Steven Pueppke as its new director. Pueppke, who also will be MSU's assistant vice president for research and graduate studies, currently works at the University of Illinois, where he has been the associate dean for research in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences since 1998. His appointment will take effect on Jan.

Rescuers relate aid experiences

East Lansing Fire Department Lt. Troy Brya said he is happy to be home after spending 10 days handing out supplies and restoring order in New Orleans. As a witness to the massive devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, Brya said helping out was a positive experience despite all the loss around him, and he was happy to arrive home. "Everywhere you look down there is a mess," he said.
