MIDDAY UPDATE: Beaumont Tower egging 'horrible, shocking scene'

She has viewed the same scene four times in the last four years. But this was by the far the worst. Patricia Johannes had only one word to describe the attack on Beaumont Tower when she saw it Sunday morning — horrifying. "It was just a horrible, shocking scene to walk up and see the eggs all over the tower and the doors — yolks everywhere," said Johannes, who is an assistant carillonneur, or bell player. At 8:30 a.m.

College becomes coed

Valley Forge Military Academy and College in Wayne, Pa., will open its doors to women for the first time in fall 2006, becoming the last all-male military academy to do so. Many in the MSU community say the move is evidence of the increasing roles women are being offered in society. History Professor Lisa Fine said women have proven to be capable of military service, and their acceptance at Valley Forge reflects this. "In the aftermath of the Gulf War and the most recent Iraq war, women have performed well and provided crucial contributions," Fine said.

Looking through a microscope, Nikki Hart determined what Shree Williams had already been sure of. Williams' garnet ring, passed down from her great grandmother, was in fact a true gemstone mounted in 10 karat gold.

MSU has 1 week before progsters 'mail in season'

MSU vs. Indiana Fish: To play or not to play? That's the big question for the Spartans after a terrific 4-0 start was wiped out by three straight losses MSU's offense was sub-par last weekend against a terrible Northwestern defense, as it struggled to put up 14 points.

Benefit walk shouldn't focus on one group

I am writing in response to the health article titled "AIDS walk focuses on Hispanic patients" (SN 10/24). I am wondering as to why a virus that doesn't discriminate against culture, race, sex or other social distinctions is being treated in a secular manner by the Lansing Area AIDS Network, or LAAN. Why was the AIDS walk not about the larger picture that focuses on all patients living with the disease?

ICE HOCKEY

Icers play No. 2 Cornell

The MSU hockey team received its Halloween treats early this year with an undefeated October. Now MSU (2-0-1 overall, 0-0-1 CCHA) is looking for an even bigger treat when the team plays No.

Stanton and Co. should have no trouble rebounding vs. Hoosiers

Quarterback MSU junior quarterback Drew Stanton is coming off the worst game of his career against Northwestern and is looking to rebound. Indiana quarterback Blake Powers is coming off a bad game himself, passing for just 72 yards in the Hoosiers' 41-10 loss to Ohio State. Powers, though, has been decent this season, throwing for 20 touchdowns against eight interceptions and he has some nice targets to throw to. Despite Stanton's poor game, he is clearly the better player.

Fan quits watching after disappointment

I have finally given up all hope for the MSU football program. After years of supporting the MSU football program, I have been forced to quit. To me, being a fan of MSU football is like being an alcoholic: You have some great times, but in the end you are left miserable, hungover and without hope.

Writer misinterprets; court case just, lawful

Although I will not quarrel with John Knowles' characterization of Harriet Miers, "Nominee Harriet Miers doesn't have much to qualify her for bench" (SN 10/26), I must take issue with the description offered in his article of the Romer v.

Man perpetuates rape stereotypes

Matt Cook, you ignorant twit: Rape is not an act of lust, attraction, love or desire. It is an act of violence, power and aggression ("Clothes contribute to reasons to rape" SN 10/27). Although women who dress provocatively might attract more attention than those you call "properly dressed" (who are you to decide what is proper, anyway?) and might provoke more lustful thoughts, it is the ideas that "men are stimulated by sight" and "men and women are influenced by different things" which help to propagate such stereotypes that women deserve to be raped, ask for it, or could do something to prevent their rape based solely on their choice of clothing. Most males have no idea what it is like to be a rapist and unless you do, I suggest you keep your opinions and theories on the subject to yourself. Kathryn Patterson 2004 graduate

Changes need to be made if blunders continue

Remember when the Spartans football team was 4-0? The campus was buzzing with excitement, the media was throwing around the idea of a Big Ten title, Johnny Spirit was booking his hotel in Pasadena, Calif., students were wearing "Drew Stanton for Heisman" shirts and the Spartans looked literally unstoppable. Then the Michigan game happened.
