Anyone's day

Thanksgiving means a lot to many, many people. It's one of those days in the year reserved for people to gather with family, friends and loved ones, no matter how they celebrate. However, it doesn't have to be a scene from a Norman Rockwell painting. A feast, ski trip or movie at the local cinema all suffice.

New program takes other resources away

When I read The State News' front-page article on the new residential college, "Living, learning collide in new college option" (SN 11/15), I thought I was reading a James Madison College brochure for prospective students.

Med school to add faculty in west Michigan

MSU officials hope to be teaching 100 first-year medical students in Grand Rapids by 2010, but first they need to find the faculty who will provide both the knowledge and financial base for the planned school. Last week, stakeholders in the expansion of MSU's College of Human Medicine to west Michigan announced their intention to create a new four-year medical school in Grand Rapids, a move that would roughly double the college's enrollment to about 200 students per class. A similar growth in the size of the college's faculty will be necessary to facilitate the new program. In order to teach second-year students — something the college hopes to do as early as 2008 — the stakeholders have projected that the equivalent of about 12 full-time teaching faculty will be needed.

"Rent" opens today in theaters nationwide

The film version of the Broadway musical "Rent" premieres in theaters nationwide today. This is the first movie adaptation of the groundbreaking 1996 musical, which many say began a social dialogue of then-taboo issues such as AIDS, drug addiction and homosexuality. Set in New York City's East Village, "Rent" explores the lives of eight bohemian, artistic friends who fall in love, struggle to survive in poverty and battle illness. "It tries to provoke the greater tolerance in general for all groups in society, especially those that have been looked on in disfavor in the past, simply by offering a powerful dramatization through music of attitudes that were already in circulation," said Sam Goldstein, an English professor at Daytona Beach Community College. Goldstein has acted in or directed about 70 off-Broadway adaptations. "The musical is powerful and humanistic.

ONLINE UPDATE: More from the Spartan's overtime loss to Ganzaga

Lahaina, Hawaii As the Gonzaga basketball team celebrated its victory over the Spartans at center court, a couple feet away, Tom Izzo was livid. The MSU head coach stomped up and down, screaming and yelling his case because he thought Adam Morrison should've been called for a foul as junior guard Shannon Brown tried for a 3 at the buzzer. He briskly marched up the hallway, visibly frustrated that his team gutted it out for more than three hours and into three overtimes, only to find itself on the losing end, 109-106. It was nothing short of drama in a dramatic contest. MSU got back from a six-point first-half deficit to go up by three at the half.

Season ends for MSU this weekend

Hanging from the rafters above the wooden floors of Jension Field House are five banners. The one in the middle is for a 1996 NCAA national semifinal appearance. It's been almost a decade since the MSU volleyball team celebrated a conference championship, and this year won't be any different.

SN contributes to false distinctions

Kudos to Josh McFarland for his recent letter: "Students are here permanently also" (SN 11/9). Indeed, The State News bares some responsibility as it continually distinguishes between "resident" and "student" in articles where the distinction is not important to understanding the story.
