Three Spartans chosen

NBA Commissioner David Stern couldn't help but comment on what a "rowdy" crowd had attended the 2006 NBA Draft at Madison Square Garden in New York City, but the big excitement for Spartans fans came when MSU guard Shannon Brown was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round and 25th overall.

'Superman' falls short

I've come to a sad realization as I've grown up: Superman just isn't that cool. Sure, the character is responsible for jump-starting the superhero genre, but he's kid's stuff — the ultimate goody-goody.

Professional program spreads diversity

A program through MSU is helping professionals from other countries connect with those in the workforce in the United States. The Visiting International Professional Program, has been teaching foreign professionals for more than 15 years about business, culture and other global issues that help make them more diversified. "We are helping people who are employed in various degrees, from journalism to business, and teaming them up with one of our own professionals to help understand more about their working area from another point of view," said Sung Soo Chung, head of operations and planning for the program.

COMMENTARY

Climate changes natural, not due to global warming

It appears that some people disagree with my comments in the article "Planetary Meltdown," (SN 6/23), that global warming is not as big of a deal as the 2008 presidential hopeful portrays it to be — and yes I did regrettably pay the $7.50 to watch Al Gore's garbage, "An Inconvenient Truth." After seeing the movie, I began doing some research and found several highly qualified scientists in the fields of geology, climatology and paleoclimatology.

COMMENTARY

Gore's movie for political gain, not to save Earth

Al Gore's timing couldn't have been better. "An Inconvenient Truth" opens during the summer at the dawn of hurricane season following the devastation of the previous, in an election year in which Republican control is staggering, and at a time when popular consensus overwhelms the National Academy of Sciences to point circumstantial fingers at industrial causes for global climate change.

Partnership to create Big Ten TV Channel

A new deal between Big Ten universities and ABC and its affiliates could not only bring more financial help to schools like MSU, but exposure as well. The deal, announced June 21, would extend coverage of men's football and basketball, women's basketball and volleyball to ESPN and ABC sports for another 10 years.

COMMENTARY

Appealing to a higher power

Sometimes public safety outweighs a person's privacy. When someone puts the lives of others in danger, we should know what happened in order to better protect ourselves.

Three Spartan hopefuls

Ager. Brown. Davis. The leaders, the headliners, the playmakers. The Spartans' Big Three have awed MSU fans with spectacular play, set benchmarks in college statistics and student athleticism, competed in wrenching battles of tournament competition and painted the covers of magazines in shades of Spartan green and white.

3 new languages could enter MSU's curriculum

Khmer, Indonesian and Uzbek could be additions to the course catalog as new language programs this fall if funding from the federal government is approved, said Marilyn McCullough, assistant director of the Asian Studies Center. Uzbek is the official language of Uzbekistan, and Khmer is spoken in Cambodia.

Study: Condom use may help prevent HPV

People who use condoms every time they have sex could significantly decrease their chances of becoming infected with human papillomavirus, or HPV, according to a recent study at the University of Washington. Researchers studied 82 female students at the university and found the women whose partners always used condoms were 70 percent less likely to get the virus than the women whose partners used condoms less than 5 percent of the time. Even women who used condoms more than half of the time were still 50 percent less likely to contract the virus, according to the study published by The New England Journal of Medicine on Thursday. The study monitored the sexual activities of the women — ages 18 to 22 — by way of electronic diaries.

Album offers mediocre emotion, reggae beat

The reggae beat is alive, but kind of over-produced. Los Angeles-born and raised vocalist Elan kicks out some perfect tunes for sitting around the pool on his first major label release "Together As One," with solid bass lines and tight drum fills.

Diner stays classic

The interior of the Old Town Diner makes the restaurant look as if it hasn't changed in decades — and in many ways it hasn't. The paneled walls, brown padded booths and stainless steel waitress station at the diner, 516 E.
