City Council votes to demolish businesses

The East Lansing City Council unanimously approved plans for two downtown developments Tuesday night. The proposals, introduced by David Krause, a developer and partner in Corey Partnership LLC, allow the Grand River Avenue building housing Cottage Inn Pizza and Peking Express to be demolished.

Campus debates culture, religion's roles in evolution

A campuswide debate about whether a person's views on evolution were determined by culture or religion was sparked after an MSU professor concluded Americans are less likely to accept the idea of evolution than people in other countries. Program doubles education

Children can learn a lot from one teacher, but for Russ Stolberg's eighth-grade science class at Olivet Middle School in Olivet, students will be treated to two. MSU's Kellogg Biological Station, or KBS, will be holding a program over the course of the next academic year that allow doctoral students an opportunity to work in K-12 level science classrooms across the state, including Stolberg's. "If one teacher does not explain something that well, this gives us the opportunity to turn to someone else and have them explain it better, said Trisha Funk, one of the eighth-graders in Stolberg's class.

McKaig named Big 10 Runner of Week for win

Alissa McKaig, a sophomore on the MSU women's cross country team, was named Big Ten Runner of the Week on Tuesday. In her first race as a Spartan, McKaig finished first in the 5,000-meter event at Friday's Jeff Drenth Memorial with a time of 17 minutes, 10 seconds.

Slow death for tailgating at MSU

Last week, ASMSU announced a revised tailgating policy allowing 100 students to be chosen from a lottery for seasonal tailgating passes. The new policy guarantees season tailgate pass-holders a spot at the tennis courts near Wilson Hall before every home game without entering a weekly lottery or paying a weekly fee.

At 6 a.m. Friday, Mark O'Brien answered a phone call that no parent wants to receive — his 20-year-old son, who is an MSU student, had been attacked and was being taken into surgery at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing to ease a blood clot pushing into his brain. "We had every terrible image going through our minds," the Grosse Pointe Park resident said.

Students to research excessive gaming

New Facebook long-awaited

There's big news in the e-world, and my life has taken a drastic turn for the better. For the poor souls who don't already know, Facebook.com has implemented a news feed, which informs students about events their friends are attending, notifies them when friends post on each others' walls and even lists those who've added new photos. The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end for only a few moments, until I realized how badly I needed this feature in my life. I've awoken many nights with beads of sweat pouring down my trembling brow, wondering if my fifth-grade choir partner is still in an open relationship.
