Pedestrian laws must change for our safety

Let's see if I have this right. When a Jeep, making a turn, runs down a pedestrian crossing the street, as one of those new timed walk signs is ticking down, it is the pedestrian's fault ("Getting hit by car is not my fault," SN 11/20). I have been complaining about pedestrian safety and right of way in East Lansing for many years, and unfortunately, this is typical.

Byrom's argument naive; NAACP far from racist

The column by Jessica Byrom used the most idiotic and naive claims to support its arguments in, "Affirmative action discriminates, not Proposal 2; move on already" (SN 11/21). I would like to start by saying I have no stance on this issue, but the fact that this column was printed infuriated me.

As the turkey digests, let's reflect on MSU hoops

1. Junior guard Drew Neitzel has embraced his role as the team's go-to scorer. Neitzel averaged 33 points per game as a senior at Wyoming Park High School but was more of a distributor during his first two years at MSU, deferring to Paul Davis, Maurice Ager and Shannon Brown.

Monday Musings

The City of Detroit is seeking a firm to lead the auction of memorabilia from Tiger Stadium, which is scheduled to be demolished soon. Among the first items to be auctioned from the clubhouse: Cecil Fielder's artificial popcorn butter machine. Chicago Bulls head coach Scott Skiles is feuding with Ben Wallace after Wallace violated team policy by wearing a headband during a game. The spat comes on the heels of Skiles' complaints last week about the 3-foot long hairs he keeps finding in the locker room shower drain. Chadron State College running back Danny Woodhead set the NCAA single-season rushing record Saturday, finishing the season with 2,740 yards. Scouts at the game were amazed that they actually found the Chadron State campus. New Lothrop High School, which has just more than 800 students, captured its first ever state football championship Friday, beating Crystal Falls Forest Park in the Division 8 state finals. Internet message board posters immediately anointed New Lothrop head coach Jake Emmendorfer as the top candidate for the vacant MSU position.

MSU's primary color

Marquise Gray's college basketball career has been a roller-coaster ride. In three up-and-down seasons, the sophomore forward has battled several injuries and has struggled to live up to the hype that came with being an elite recruit. Gray's performance against Oakland (4-3) on Saturday was one of the "up" days.

Democrats, the party of disorder

It was during Franklin Roosevelt's first term that Will Rogers is said to have joked: "I am a member of no organized political party — I am Democrat." As the dust of this momentous midterm election settles, that joke has been resurrected — mostly by people much less funny than Rogers — to describe the dilemma of the incoming Democratic majorities in both congressional houses.

High school football a reminder of so much

As I arrived at Ford Field on Saturday to watch my alma mater, Dakota High School, play in the Division 1 state football finals, my expectations were low. I didn't think Dakota would come out with a win, seeing as it was the school's first appearance in the finals and its opponent was Rockford, which had won the last two state titles and has a lot of kids with more facial hair than I have now. And I didn't think I'd be all that excited by the game, seeing as I don't recognize any of the names on the jerseys anymore and my expectations had been raised by rooting for a real football team (kind of) for the last four years.
