Campus media question SN employment policy

Student journalists are challenging a State News policy through ASMSU. The MSU Alternative Media Alliance, or MAMA, says a policy that limits State News journalists from working for other media outlets is "exclusionary." The alliance is composed of Purpose Magazine, SpartanEdge.com, The Spartan Weekly, FEM Magazine and The Big Green. At its Nov.

Dudley do right

Chestnut Hill, Mass. — The Spartans had two glaring deficiencies in the first half of Wednesday night's matchup with Boston College: They couldn't rebound, and they couldn't shoot. And you don't need to be John Wooden or Bobby Knight to know that formula spelled disaster for MSU. Led by 30 points and 10 rebounds from forward Jared Dudley — a glass-cleaning, garbage-point-grabbing extraordinaire — the Eagles held off a late MSU comeback to notch a 65-58 victory at Conte Forum in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. "Dudley might end up my favorite player of the year," MSU head coach Tom Izzo said.

Byrom wrong: Groups are supportive, not racist

Jessica Byrom is sick and tired of hearing about Proposal 2, evidenced in "Affirmative action discriminates, not Proposal 2; move on already" (SN 11/21). I would ask Byrom to venture out of her lily-white world and imagine, just for a moment, how it might feel to be sick and tired every day. She wonders why she can't have her own organization for white students.

YAF student group doesn't want freedom for anyone

I can no longer bottle up my disdain for Kyle Bristow or the "Young Americans for Freedom." This unpatriotic group claims to promote freedom — heck, it's in their title — but every time I read "gay," "transgender" or "immigrants," sure enough, Bristow and these "Young Americans" are soon to follow in protest. They endorse such activities as the infamous "Catch an Illegal Immigrant Day" and now protest a Lansing ordinance that recognizes gender and sexual identity as nondiscriminatory clauses, as discussed in "Lansing ordinance prompts protest" (SN 11/21). Take a quote from Bristow himself from the aforementioned article: "The whole part where (transsexuals) are identified as a special group and deserve special privileges is just wrong.

Granholm proposes business tax plan

Lansing — Gov. Jennifer Granholm announced Wednesday a replacement for a business tax accused of inhibiting economic growth in Michigan. Although ridding Michigan of the Single Business Tax is a positive step for businesses, Granholm's proposed replacement is not perfect, MSU professors and a local business owner said. Still, Crunchy's bar owner Vivian Milligan said it might be a change for the better. "You never know what the repercussions will be," she said.

Volleyball team preps for NCAA Tournament

The MSU volleyball team is packing its bags for California's golden coast. And if things go well, the Spartans could soon be in Hawaii. But it won't be a vacation. Rather than taking their game to the beaches, the Spartans will hit the hardwood against Utah (27-3) at 8:30 p.m.

Helping others quit smoking is delicate situation

Dr. D., My roommate is practically a chain-smoker. All of my stuff now reeks of smoke! How do I politely say, "Take your cancer stick outside and stop killing my lungs!" — not to mention voice my concern about what she's doing to her own lungs? -Bad Air Dear BA, "Smooooooking!" This refrain, once uttered by Jim Carrey in the movie "The Mask" seems appropriate here for two reasons. One, it seems to capture the intensity of your emotions as you talk about the infringement on your rights, and two, this is about a person who once actually made a conscious decision to smoke, but now does it repeatedly for physical, possibly emotional and sometimes unconscious reasons.

Drum class brings African culture to Lansing area

Lansing — Tom Machowicz's blue eyes opened wide with passion every time he spoke of the West African Malinké people during breaks from playing djembe at Magdalena's Tea House in Lansing. "Guinea is the poorest nation in the world, but it's probably the richest in drum music," he said. Machowicz spent a month in Guinea two years ago while studying traditional West African drum music. On Monday night, Machowicz taught the last of three $15 monthly classes to about 11 beginning drum players. Most of the participants played the djembe, a West African hand drum made of a tree trunk, metal rings, rope and goat skin.
