ASMSU votes to remove Bristow

It's official. Kyle Bristow is no longer the James Madison College representative for ASMSU — MSU's undergraduate student government. Bristow, chairman of Young Americans for Freedom, or YAF, and a member of the MSU College Republicans, was removed from his student government position after a recall election was held Oct.

COMMENTARY

Abortion should be choice not denied to women

I have really enjoyed many of Jessica Byrom's columns because they tend to have such a fresh viewpoint, which is why I was particularly disappointed with the one that ran last Thursday which compared abortion with casualties of war in "Casualties of war mourned, not those killed by abortion" (SN 10/26). Planned Parenthood doesn't receive funding from taxpayers, as Byrom implied.

Secular society lacks morals found in religion

Lauren Fox highlights the deteriorating condition of our society in "Raising kids today is scary prospect" (SN 10/23). She also wrote, "Church seemed to be the only sanctuary to survive the moral decay of modern life." It then dawned on me that the secular part of society lacks strict personal morals that a religious society maintains.

BREAKING NEWS: John L. Smith out after the season (update 2:30 p.m.)

MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon announced football head coach John L. Smith will not return to the program following the end of the season with three games left. Simon said at today's press conference that she and Athletics Director Ron Mason met Tuesday and they "independently came to the conclusion" for the termination. Mason said he then met with Smith early this morning to inform him of the move.

MIDDAY UPDATE: Jesse Jackson to rally on campus tonight

Prominent civil rights activist and Bapist minister Jesse Jackson will rally tonight at 8 p.m. with Michigan attorney general candidate Amos Williams in the Kellogg Center on campus. The stop is one of six scheduled for Jackson and Williams on Wednesday in Michigan.

Nontraditional students honor faculty for assistance

The people who make it possible for nontraditional students to attend class, study for exams and work for rent money or groceries are being rewarded. As National Nontraditional Student Recognition Week begins next week, the MSU Family Resource Center is honoring faculty and staff members who have helped married students, commuters, military service members or those who have other unusual circumstances maintain their busy schedules.

Whitmer runs for state Senate twice in a year, now against Lambert

Democratic state Sen. Gretchen Whitmer is readying herself for her second election in less than a year. Because she technically filled the vacant Senate position left by now-Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero in March, she's running again this November for a second term. This time she's up against Republican challenger Frank Lambert. Both candidates agree that educational funding is an important issue facing Michigan residents.
