WEB UDPATE: Spartans no longer feeling blue on power play

Detroit — Don't look now, but the No. 14 Spartans have established an effective power play. MSU's power play, which was operating at a 16.7 conversion percentage prior to the Great Lakes Invitational, combined to score six goals in two games en route to its tournament championship and second in three years.

WEB UPDATE: Neitzel leads Spartans in comeback

Tom Izzo wasted no time in expressing his feelings regarding the state of his basketball team. During the press conference that followed Tuesday's 67-58 win over Belmont, the men's basketball head coach's opening statement was clear and concise.

WEB UPDATE: Neitzel's career night leads Spartans

Junior guard Drew Neitzel notched a career-high 32 points in Saturday's 69-61 win against Chicago State, but it was how he scored them that demonstrated the transformation he's gone through this season. Neitzel played almost a pure shooting guard role, maneuvering through baseline screens and doing most of his shooting after catching a pass.

WEB UPDATE: Injuries will force Izzo to go big

With his perimeter options off the bench hovering close to zero, MSU men's basketball head coach Tom Izzo might have no choice but to go big. Very big. With freshman forward Raymar Morgan likely out until the Big Ten season (early January) with a stress fracture in his shin, and sophomore guard Maurice Joseph also out at least that long after suffering a stress reaction in his right foot Saturday, Izzo said Monday he likely will experiment with a three big-men lineup for at least part of Saturday's game against Chicago State (7 p.m., Breslin Center). "We're going to have to make a lot of adjustments as a staff," Izzo said. The switch — which would have some combination of sophomore forward Marquise Gray, sophomore centers Idong Ibok and Goran Suton and junior center Drew Naymick on the floor at the same time — would give the Spartans (9-2) a phenomenal size advantage but would disrupt much of their existing game plan. Izzo said a new half-court offense would have to be implemented to accomodate the big lineup.

WEB UPDATE: Pay increase still keeps Simon's salary among Big Ten's bottom half

The MSU Board of Trustees approved a $70,000 pay raise Friday for MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon, which increases her salary to $495,000. Simon received an earlier pay increase of $85,000 in January, which she donated back to the university. Trustee Donald Nugent said the board's approval of Simon's raise was to keep up with the salaries of the other Big Ten university presidents. "We believe you've got to pay your people competitively," Nugent said.

WEB UPDATE: MSU completes grueling stretch of schedule with 76-61 win

Auburn Hills — It might be hard to envision a finish line a month into the season, but MSU's 76-61 win against BYU on Saturday at The Palace of Auburn Hills marked the end of a turbulent and trying month for the Spartans. It was MSU's 11th game in 30 days — a stretch head coach Tom Izzo likened to an NBA schedule.

Singing all the way to D.C.

The four-part harmony of the MSU men's a cappella group, The Accafellas, can be heard reverberating off the walls of the Music Building at night. The nine men are preparing for the performance of a lifetime: They have received the honor of singing Christmas carols at the White House. Unlike other groups, which apply to sing in arguably the most famous house in the world, the group was offered the honor from the White House associate director of visitors.

Women set to join men at Palace

Another benchmark in the history of MSU's women's basketball will occur at noon Saturday. The Spartans will make the short jaunt to The Palace of Auburn Hills to take on Hartford in the first game of the Spartan Clash. It will be the first time the women's basketball team has played at The Palace, which is home to the NBA's Detroit Pistons and the two-time WNBA Champion Detroit Shock. "It'll be fun," MSU head coach Joanne P.
