Golf team places 16th at NCAA Championships

The MSU women's golf team finished 16th at the NCAA Championships with a total score of 1,232. The team finished the four-day tournament Friday, held at LPGA International Legends Course in Daytona Beach, Fla. Seniors Mandi McConnell, Rachel Meikle and Heather Rose came within the top 50 in the nation, the first time in school history MSU recorded three top-50 finishes at the NCAA Championships. McConnell led the Spartans with a 30th-place finish following a four-day total of 302, and finished the season with a 76.18 stroke average in 40 rounds, the ninth best in school history.

Bills could alleviate student apathy

Voting - most consider it a hassle and, for some, a waste of time. With a 50.7 percent turnout for the midterm election, getting voters is a problem Each time elections roll around, citizens everywhere can be found making excuses for why they will not be voting. "It's too difficult to get to the polls," "my vote won't make a difference," or "I don't have the time to register." All of these are reasons given for why people don't vote. However, the state legislature is working to remove the last reason from the list. Registering to vote can be a time-consuming process that the average student doesn't have time for between classes, work and other extracurricular activities.

Politicians feud over gas prices

As gas prices in Michigan leap to $4, everyone seems to be looking for the answer to one question: Why? Michigan presently faces the second highest average gas prices in the nation at $3.51 per gallon, trailing Illinois by roughly a cent, according to AAA. "It doesn't surprise me just because the prices are so high, but at the same time I had no idea," English junior Anna Burch said.

Women's hoops staff complete with hire

MSU women's basketball head coach Suzy Merchant finalized her coaching staff by hiring Evelyn Thompson as an assistant coach. Thompson, an assistant at Buffalo for the past five seasons, will join assistant coaches Shane Clipfell and Mike Geary, director of basketball operations Julie Pagel, video coordinator Monique Govan and director of basketball operations intern Patrice McKinney.

Highway construction closes US-23 lanes

Construction will begin at 8 p.m. March 29 on Interstate 96 between M-52 and M-59. The construction will take place at night Sunday-Thursday throughout June. There also will be a single lane closure starting at 8 p.m.

Fifth-grader funds research

As royal blue bracelets reading "Be Brave" wrapped around children's' wrists at Williamston's elementary schools Thursday, 11-year-old Dan Warschefsky sat in a chair to take everything in. Students from Discovery and Explorer Elementary schools flocked outside into the sunny, mid-80-degree weather, danced to music, walked a fitness path and donated to a research fund - exactly what Dan had set forth to do. "I just wanted to raise money for my brother's fund," Dan, a fifth-grade student, said.

Despite Dems' status, progress still lacking

Seriously, how bad do the Democrats want to lose the 2008 election? Democrats did not win Congress because America suddenly became progressive, socially-conscious and color-blind. They won the House and the Senate last November because bitter, disillusioned conservatives stayed home, refusing to vote for a reckless and dishonest administration.
