Making Mich smokefree a matter of health

As a state representative for the Lansing area, I have to disagree with the position The State News editorial board took in its editorial Smoking ban should be decided by restaurants (SN 2/16). The editorial board missed the main point of smoke-free legislation: Keeping workers healthy, plain and simple.

ASMSU creates new position to ease workload of chairperson

ASMSU’s Academic Assembly created a parliamentarian officer position who will assume the duties of the internal vice chairperson Tuesday. The position was created to decrease the workload of assembly chairperson pro-tempore Brad McDonald, who had taken on the duties of chairperson after Christopher Kulesza resigned from the position Feb. 17.

Two female roommates returned from spring break to find their Case Hall room was broken into, apparently so the intruders could smoke marijuana, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

Instead of feeling burned, however, schools are using the recent meltdown as an example to teach students to avoid similar mistakes in the future.

Downtown businesses going bust

East Lansing business owner Richard Hall has seen many businesses come and go during his 30 years in town. Lately, he’s seen a few more going than coming along Grand River Avenue. Hall, a co-owner of Campus Barbers Inc., 621 E. Grand River Ave., said he doesn’t believe the vacancies are caused purely by poor economic conditions.

MSU to help research media effects on children

MSU researchers, as part of a new partnership with Michigan Children’s Trust Fund, or CTF, will examine the media’s effect on child abuse in today’s society. The CTF — a statewide child abuse prevention foundation — will work with MSU’s Children’s Central, a program that is part of the university’s Department of Advertising, Public Relations and Retailing.

Wasteful spending builds bridges to nowhere for MSU

MSU employee Charlotte Wilks knows firsthand that railroad crossings can be dangerous. She once saw a fellow employee climb between the cars of a stopped train near her laboratory in the Life Sciences Building. The employee’s daughter had gotten sick while in day care on the other side of the tracks.

Pay cuts necessary for elected officials

Everyone across the country is telling Michigan the same thing: Sacrifices must be made. Michigan has been portrayed as Uncle Sam’s disobedient, immature, thumb-sucking nephew. The other 49 nephews and nieces are stubborn, going through the growing pains of a degenerating superpower.

Taking year off not financially beneficial

Taking a year off before enrolling in college can be viewed as either a significant challenge or an opportunity depending on how the student plans to spend the year. However, a recent proposal by President Barack Obama could give students added incentive to wait.
