Mich. networking Web site waste of time, money

The state has decided to take a new approach to helping students find their career: social networking, at the cost of $1.5 million. The Michigan Department of Treasury will launch its new Web site in September, which is meant to help students transition between high school, college and a career.

MSU’s newest science research facility, BEACON, will allow researchers to apply evolutionary principles to biological and non-biological applications. The facility was announced last week and is funded by a $25 million grant from the National Science Foundation.

Stimulus funds help boost MSU grants, awards since June 2009

MSU is looking to maintain gifts, grants and other awards after the total number received by the university increased by about $42 million during the past year. The university received 1,967 awards totaling $298.7 million from June 6, 2009, to Jan. 29, according to a report presented to the MSU Board of Trustees at its Feb. 12 meeting.

4 Spartans to visit D.C., talk future of energy

Four MSU students are headed to Washington, D.C., on Tuesday to discuss clean energy with some of Washington’s elite. They won the 2009 Consequence Campaign’s Organize to be Heard Challenge, a competition designed to encourage college students to get involved in the clean energy movement by raising awareness about clean energy. The four students helped form the MSU chapter of Repower America, a national organization for clean energy.

4 candidates run for Ingham County Commissioner

Two long-time political figures in Greater Lansing, a recent MSU College of Law graduate and a political newcomer with a financial background are running for the single open seat, which is a partial term through the end of 2010.

A 24-year-old man was found incapacitated Thursday afternoon in the Owen Hall lounge, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. The man, who currently is not a student, is a former resident of Owen Hall.

Struttin' cowgirls

Tiaras and cowboy boots seem an unlikely combination for most people, but not for animal science freshman Starr Ries, who competed in the Miss MSU Rodeo Queen Competition for the first time this past weekend. The MSU Rodeo Club hosted the Spartan Stamapede Rodeo, which started Thursday evening with completing a horsemanship pattern and concluded Saturday evening with the crowning of the queen.

MSU represented in India trip

When Jeffrey Riedinger, dean of MSU’s International Studies and Programs and director of MSU’s Center for Advanced Study of International Development, will travel to India as part of the Institute of International Education, or IIE, U.S. University Presidents’ Delegation to India. He will accompany U.S. Under Secretary of Education Martha Kanter and officials from 12 other universities.

E.L. looks to save with new council procedures

The East Lansing City Council plans to approve all city liquor licenses based on the recommendation of the East Lansing Police Department at its work session, 7 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall, 410 Abbot Road. Councilmember Nathan Triplett also will present five council operational changes and council members will consider increasing taxi company license fees.

MSU celebrates campus opening

MSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine celebrated the opening Monday of a new campus at Macomb Community College’s University Center in Clinton Township, said Kari Hortos, associate dean at the site. The new facility opened to about 50 students at the start of the spring semester, Hortos said.

Event to focus on food and nutrition

Experts will discuss key food and nutrition issues and learn about food’s role in their overall health and well-being during the 2010 Choices Conference. The annual conference is scheduled for March 10 and 11 at Kellogg Center.

Caribbean events to benefit Haiti

A pair of fundraisers scheduled for Thursday and Friday will raise money for relief projects in earthquake-torn Haiti. The fundraising efforts will begin with Taste of the Caribbean at 5 p.m.

State of the State Survey reveals low consumer confidence

Consumer confidence still is low compared to past years, but the numbers show signs of improvement, according to a survey by economics professor Charles Ballard. Out of the 991 people between the ages of 18 to 95 surveyed, 32 of whom were age 25 or under, 54 percent felt they were worse off compared to one year ago. Although Ballard said the number might look bad on paper, it is the lowest since 2007.

Performance to offer unique take on dance

About 25 performers will be debuting their talent of movement, dance and art at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in The Residential College in the Arts and Humanities Auditorium of Synder-Phillips Hall. One performance will be put on each day throughout the week through Sunday, with two concerts on Saturday.
