Mexican ballet leaps in to Wharton

After spending the last two summers scuba diving, riding elephants, eating maggots, drinking duck blood soup, visiting Buddhist temples and teaching English in rural elementary schools in southeast Asia, Whitney Lund, a 2009 MSU alumna, became addicted to adventure travel. Looking for another opportunity to do something different, she decided to audition for the pinnacle of wilderness tests: the CBS show “Survivor.”
Cetera Washington lives by the mantra that while defense wins games, rebounding wins championships. So it should be no surprise the junior forward recently has stepped on the accelerator in both areas, becoming a key force during MSU’s run of 10 wins in its past 11 games.
Competing against the nation’s best every week, the MSU wrestling team finally is in line to reap the benefits of facing a grueling schedule with a young lineup. As the team prepares for this weekend’s Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor, it hopes the growth of its underclassmen will carry over in the results of the competition.
It is hard to believe that MSU could not find a different place for the new center, and that it was absolutely necessary to demolish the library. The decision was taken so fast that even the professors of the Department of Physics and Astronomy learned about that news at the faculty meeting, so that their following letter with objections was too late because the matter was already decided without asking for their opinion.
Numerous times, club sports at our university achieve great accomplishments with little acknowledgement from The State News. The particular event that motivated me recently was a member of our team, microbiology senior Adetayo Mafe, was listed on the USA rugby site as a reserve competing right now to be a member of the 2010 USA National Women’s World Cup Team.
An average student might look at these salary increases and be angry, especially considering MSU’s recent cuts in other areas. But in the grand scheme of things, raises for university officials are a normal occurrence, and students shouldn’t be upset without looking further into the situation.
I’m more than a little hesitant to jump on board of one of MSU’s fine study abroad programs. I like my trips to be a nice mixture of educational and relaxation activities, so I’d rather not base my trek on an education. Although my mind is teetering back and forth between going, I acknowledge the fact there are countless benefits for participants and that experiences vary from person to person.
Although the Spartans posted an impressive regular season, everything is on the line as the CCHA Tournament approaches. MSU still is a bubble team trying to earn an at-large bid into the 16-team NCAA Tournament. And they likely will need a deep run in the conference playoffs to receive an invite to the “big dance.” Here’s a look at the Spartans’ regular season grades as they prepare for the CCHA Tournament:
19 homeless veterans are spending six weeks at MSU’s Kellogg Biological Station in Hickory Corners, Mich. outside of Kalamazoo, taking agriculture courses led by MSU professors as part of the Vets to Ag program. The program, now in its second session, is aimed at preparing veterans for jobs in agriculture.
About 20 students from Students Promoting Animal Rights, or SPAR, visited MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon’s office to deliver an 850-signature petition demanding the university ban the Royal Hanneford Circus from campus. The circus is scheduled to run March 12-14.
A 47-year-old female reported her keys stolen from her purse Feb. 22 in Wells Hall, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. The woman said she left her purse unattended between 7:45 a.m. and 5:20 p.m. when her keys were stolen. The keys were valued at $12, McGlothian-Taylor said.

MSU professors Robert Hausinger and Denis Proshlyakov developed a new method of slowing down enzymes and analyzed the steps in the reaction process of the bacterial enzyme Taurine/alpha-ketoglutarate dioxygenase, or TauD. This discovery could help researchers develop new medicines or help clean the environment, Proshlyakov said.
The East Lansing City Council likely will approve budget amendments that will reduce more than $1.9 million for the 2009-10 fiscal year during its 7:30 p.m.
MSU will be home to a new social media research and development center after university officials announced Monday a partnership with a networking enterprise company. The university is partnering with INgage Networks of Naples, Fla., a company that helps businesses and government entities use networking and social media to solve various problems.

For both Tom Chodl and Jon Wiita, a road trip to Texas is the last spring break hurrah as MSU students — with a twist. Instead of pulling out the ol’ Rand McNally paper map, Chodl and Wiita are turning to Google Maps and asking users to plan the trip for them through their blog.
