Budget bill proposes cut to university state funding

The Michigan Senate Appropriations Committee proposed Wednesday a 3.1 percent decrease in state funding for public universities for the fiscal year beginning Oct. 1. If enacted by the state Legislature and Gov. Jennifer Granholm, the proposal could reduce MSU’s state funding by $9.1 million.

House GOP will not seek earmarks

U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Brighton, said he would not pursue any earmarks in the upcoming budget year, leaving university and community officials uncertain about the future of federal funding. More than $9 million in federal earmarks were allotted to benefit MSU research initiatives last year.

ASMSU to set criteria for new scholarship

Members of ASMSU’s Academic and Student assemblies hope to work on details Thursday for a bill that would finance two scholarships totaling $66,000. ASMSU also would contribute to the university’s Spartan Scholarship Challenge. The university would set criteria for its own scholarship, while ASMSU will set the criteria for the new scholarship.

Colleagues, students fondly remember mentor

George Axinn, a retired MSU professor, who continued to teach an MSU course online and at times returned to the university to teach free of charge after moving to Tucson, Ariz. in the late 1990s, died March 8 of natural causes after having seizures from unknown causes, his daughter, Martha Jerrim, said. He was 84-years-old.

Vet college to improve efficacy

Students and faculty gathered Wednesday for the first College of Veterinary Medicine Education Day to discuss current and future learning processes in the college. The day-long event featured breakout sessions ranging from the use of technology in learning and collaboration, the use of the Internet in education and discussions on teaching methods.

Study: youth attitudes uniform through time

An MSU associate psychology professor, along with the help of a professor from Western Ontario University, recently found that America’s youth have changed very little throughout the past 30 years. Brent Donnellan, an associate professor in the Department of Psychology, analyzed data from a University of Michigan survey and said he discovered the attitudes, attributes and personalities of youth have remained relatively the same since the survey began in 1976.

Pfizer grants MSU researcher $100K

Apoorv Kalra, an assistant professor in MSU’s College of Human Medicine, was one of nine researchers chosen nationwide to receive Pfizer’s 2009 Young Investigator Antibacterial Research Award for his study on the effects of the antibiotic linezolid on the Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, a common cause of staph infections.

Event to celebrate pets this weekend

The College of Veterinary Medicine will honor more than 50 pets at the annual “Celebration of Life” event from 1-4 p.m., Saturday in the college’s Oncology Center, on Wilson Road. The celebration will honor pets that faced life threatening situations, as well as their owners and veterinarians, according to a statement from MSU.

The city of East Lansing and MSU announced that “Zeitoun,” by Dave Eggers, will be the 2010 One Book, One Community selection. The book follows the true story of Abdulrahman Zeitoun, a Syrian man struggling with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Burcham Hills Retirement Community, 2700 Burcham Drive, held a St.Patrick’s Day party Wednesday for residents of the community and their family members. Partygoers enjoyed various snacks, green beer and traditional Irish entertainment.

Academic Council approves updates for bylaw changes

After about four years of work, the last of a series of Academic Governance bylaw changes were approved to move on to the next step of the process during a Tuesday Faculty Council meeting. The goal is to have the document through the next step of approval — Academic Council — by the end of April, said Robert Maleczka, Executive Committee of Academic Council, or ECAC, vice chairman.

After an NFL Combine performance that he felt was “average,” former MSU wide receiver Blair White took advantage of perhaps his final chance to showcase his skills Wednesday in front of a handful of NFL scouts at the MSU football team’s Pro Day at the Duffy Daugherty Football Building.

My real reason for writing is regarding the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum. It seems like this project never quite got the media attention of the MSU alumni as did the Spartans logo change proposal. It’s a shame that it didn’t!
