MSU saves money on snow clean up

Tuesday’s snowstorm gave MSU Landscape Services an opportunity to clear roads without clearing out the bank. Employees cleaned a majority of campus sidewalks and roads by about 8 a.m. Wednesday, but a diluted liquid salt pretreatment gave the department more time to bring in additional help, said Gerry Dobbs, MSU Landscape Services manager.

Spartans prepare for another 3-point shooting team in U-M

There’s nothing like a rivalry game to get a team going after a tough loss. Following Sunday’s disappointing loss at Iowa, the MSU women’s basketball team will be anxious to get back at it tonight when they head to Crisler Arena to play Michigan at 7 p.m. Four days after the team struggled defensively against the Hawkeyes, MSU goes into Ann Arbor against a team that will play a very similar style — drive to the basket and either put up a shot or kick out for a 3-point attempt.

Klages hopes gymnasts 'take it to next level' Sunday vs. Illinois

Despite coming off its two highest-scoring performances of the season, the No. 22 MSU gymnastics team only is thinking about scoring higher as it prepares for this weekend’s meet at Illinois. The Spartans scored a 194.550 in a second-place finish at Western Michigan last weekend after pulling together a season-best 194.875 the previous weekend against Ohio State.

Teike impressive in rookie campaign

After competing strongly in a national tournament as a 12-year-old, Shanthi Teike knew gymnastics was the right path for her. What she might not have expected was finding a lot of success this early in her collegiate career. Teike, a freshman MSU gymnast, has been one of the Spartans’ most consistent performers this season, regularly finishing in the top five and proving to be a nice complement to the team’s juniors and seniors.

Spartans give Chicago shot of MSU

The friendship among MSU students Marvin Husby, Anthony Eugenio and Matthew Butler began at a bar, and it’s never left. “My partner, Matt Butler, was a bartender at P.T. O’Malley’s, and myself and my partner Anthony Eugenio were far too frequent of patrons,” Husby said. “That’s how we became friends.” Butler said his friends were regulars at the bar.

MSU basketball team requires support of entire Breslin crowd

Section 106, row 2, seat 3. That was the number on my now-crinkled ticket to the MSU vs. Purdue basketball game. I was so close to the Spartans’ bench I could see the studs on Travis Walton’s Final Four ring and count the number of gray hairs head coach Tom Izzo got from the beating his team received at home.

Our culture must combat injustices

When I was 16, like many 16-year-old girls throughout history, the only thing I ever wanted to do — besides get my homework done, pass my driver’s test and hang out with friends — was talk to boys. Something I find to be a natural part of growing up was not tolerated for Medine Memi, a 16-year-old girl from Kahta, a city in Southeastern Turkey.

COMMENTARY

MSU should allow students to attend jury duty

Go to class and break the law, or skip class and risk failing? That’s the worry of some students who are summoned for jury duty during the semester. According to current MSU College of Law attendance policies, a student cannot miss more than two weeks of class, regardless of the excuse, including a legal obligation such as jury duty. So if a student was summoned for jury duty and the court case lasted more than two weeks, that student would not receive credit for an entire semester of work.

Lucas shows grit, heart in loss

Funny, the effect ankle injuries have on star MSU point guards. Kalin Lucas’ performance on a bum ankle Tuesday night against Purdue brought back memories of Mateen Cleaves’ 2000 championship game effort.

Post closing could lead to reduced jail capacity

Sentences for minor offenses might include less jail time if a controversial jail closure is approved by the Ingham County Board of Commissioners. The proposal to close the post would result in 56 to 64 fewer beds for local inmates, reducing the jail’s capacity for offenders by about 14 percent. A postponed vote Tuesday regarding the proposal has yet to be rescheduled.

Whiteout woes
