Once upon a time, if you wanted to go to an MSU baseball game, you had to weigh it against a sore back and fiberglass in the seat of your pants from a pathetic excuse for stadium seating. There was no regional Big Ten Network exposure, the media accommodations were akin to Marshall Mathers’ first trailer park home and player introduction music came from what sounded more like an iHome than a PA system. Nobody in the MSU baseball community longs for those days of yore.
The Student Apparel Design Association, or SADA, is presenting the 2010 SADA Fashion Show: The Art of Fashion from 7-10 p.m. Saturday at Lansing Center, 333 E. Michigan Ave, in Lansing.
The MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources is hosting Small Animals Day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the MSU Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education and various farms.
The MSU Horticulture Club will hold its yearly Spring Show from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday in the conservatory and head house area of the Plant and Soil Sciences Building.
MSU Breakdance Club and ASMSU will present a breakdance battle, Red Cedar Ransom Vol. 2, at 5 p.m. Saturday in Demonstration Hall.
“Rent” will be performed at 8 p.m. Friday, 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at Wharton Center’s Pasant Theatre. Next week, it will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 8 p.m. April 23, 2 and 8 p.m. April 24 and 2 p.m. April 25. Tickets are $15 for students, $18 for seniors, MSU faculty and staff and $20 for general admission.
The MSU football team has to wait until the annual Spring Game on April 24 to show Spartans fans what its been working on this spring. If MSU head coach Mark Dantonio’s reaction to his team’s first spring scrimmage is any indication, MSU fans should like what they see.
The Council of Graduate Students, or COGS, is working on fellowship criteria to add to the monetary pot available to graduate and professional students. An initial endowment would be $125,000, which COGS has accumulated in the past five to 10 years from budget surpluses.
Luke Fochtman celebrated his third Christmas in the hospital. Annabelle Kong spent her senior year attending 8 a.m. classes after 5 a.m. wake-up calls for medication and 7 a.m. radiation treatments. Kelly Montgomery balanced cancer treatments with graduate school applications and student organizations.
Former U.S. Rep. Joseph Kennedy II will be the keynote speaker at MSU’s May 7 undergraduate graduation convocation, University spokesman Terry Denbow confirmed Thursday. Kennedy, who served for 12 years as a U.S. Representative and is the son of the late former U.S. Sen. Robert Kennedy, is one of two speakers scheduled for graduation commencement ceremonies. He will receive an honorary doctorate of laws at the ceremony.
Former “Tonight Show” host Conan O’Brien will perform “The Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour” on May 21 at MSU, ASMSU officials said Thursday.
The Spartan Scholarship Challenge has generated 54 endowed scholarships since its announcement in October 2009. Donations are totaling about $1.6 million. The scholarship challenge expires Dec. 31 and while university officials are please with the response so far, MSU will continue to promote the scholarship throughout the rest of 2010.
Brody Complex might be moving onto the city’s water stystem, which could generate about $2.2 million for East Lansing. The project would make Brody Complex the second MSU development to run on city water. MSU currently supplies its own water for campus buildings.
Housing and dining rate increases and the demolition of two campus apartment complexes will be on the MSU Board of Trustees’ docket at its meeting Friday. The meeting is scheduled to take place at 9:30 a.m. in Room 401 of the Administration Building.

A 19-year-old male student was arrested Monday for having marijuana in his dorm room, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. The student was arrested Monday after police officers were dispatched to Emmons Hall because of a strong odor of marijuana.
Western Michigan right fielder Tim Cross hit a game-winning double in the bottom of the ninth to break a 10-10 tie, giving the Broncos a 11-10 win and the MSU baseball team its first two-game losing of the season.
The MSU women’s golf team hope to ride its success into this weekend’s Buckeye Invitational, the final tournament of the regular season and last tune-up before Big Ten Championships.
Chen-Yun Liu took the stage, bowed and took a seat at the piano in the noiseless auditorium. Liu, a music performance doctoral student, was one of three MSU College of Music students to play in a master class Wednesday in the Music Building Auditorium with composer and guest artist Alexander Korsantia as part of the college’s Chopin Bicentennial Celebration.
