Race to the Top not best way to help schools

Race to the Top is a contest for money based on which states can best formulate a plan to conform to the federal government’s wishes. But the federal government doesn’t necessarily know what’s best for children’s education, and asking states to change in exchange for money rather than for what might be in the best interest of students is not right.

Outsourcing TAs hinders learning

A few universities are now outsourcing grading in a shallow attempt to provide a supposedly more thorough evaluation for students. Recently, the University of Houston has fallen into this educational debacle. With a lack of TAs in classrooms, the institution has resorted to e-mailing students’ homework to India, where their work is graded by a team of professional reviewers, educated to give a sophisticated analysis of a paper.

On Thursday, students involved in the MSU campus chapter for TOMS Shoes will be working to raise awareness about global poverty by joining the international community in taking off their shoes and participating in a one mile barefoot campus walk.

Pilot plan to require online prof assessment

A pilot program expected to launch this summer will require students in selected courses to respond to online Student Instructional Rating System, or SIRS, forms in order to receive their grades on time. Students in the program will be able to either complete the survey or click an option to decline. Those who choose not to respond will wait an additional week to receive their grades.

City defends development's integrity

An East Lansing resident and ardent opponent of the City Center II project said during Tuesday’s City Council meeting that he plans to ask Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm to remove East Lansing City Council members from their positions for violating the state constitution in regard to property acquisition and funding for the development.

Five participating universities now are included in a program that allows selected students early admission assurance in MSU’s College of Human Medicine. Under the partnership, the five participating Michigan universities each are allotted several spots for qualified students who apply to MSU’s College of Human Medicine during their junior year.

Students selected for service awards

Four MSU students have been chosen as award recipients for their commitment to community service as a part of the 14th annual Outstanding Student Service Awards through the Michigan Campus Compact, or the MCC.
