Some faculty could see new pay schedule

Proposed changes to the pay schedule for academic year faculty were discussed Tuesday at an Executive Committee of Academic Council meeting. Proposals for a different pay schedule would be implemented by August, if the proposal is enacted. Under the new proposal, faculty would be paid money usually withheld under the current system during the academic year and no longer would receive a paycheck during the summer months.

E.L. City Council passes multiple budget cuts

Amendments to the 2009-10 fiscal year budget imposing more than $1.9 million in reductions were approved by the East Lansing City Council Tuesday at its meeting. City officials predicted layoffs for the 2010-11 fiscal year, in which the city will face a $2.5 million shortfall.

Police brief 03/03/10

A 21-year-old male MSU student reported his bike stolen Feb. 23, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. The bike was locked with a cable lock near Mason Hall. The bike is a red Schwinn bike valued at $200, McGlothian-Taylor said.

RHA to hold election for association's leader

The Residence Halls Association, or RHA, will will hold its presidential elections at 7 p.m. Wednesday night in Van Hoosen Hall. The three candidates include RHA President Emma Perot, Vice President Chelsea Satkowiak and McDonel Hall representative Ryan Starski.

Snow removal services reduced

Snow removal services in East Lansing were reduced because of a steady decrease in tax revenue, the city announced Tuesday. Currently, snow removal starts when there are 3 or more inches of snow on the ground.

The Center for Gender in Global Context at MSU will host its spring colloquial series, New Research on Women and Gender: Global and Local Perspectives, at 1:30 p.m. March 19 in Room 302 of the International Center.

Curtis Stokes, dean of James Madison College, will lead a lecture and discussion Wednesday titled Race and Human Rights at 6 p.m. in Club Spartan on the third floor of Case Hall.

MSU, Sparrow to send relief team to Haiti

MSU and Lansing’s Sparrow Hospital are teaming up to help relief efforts in Haiti by sending representatives to the country on Wednesday. Together, they are sending five people to Haiti to assess what aid MSU and Sparrow can offer the disaster relief in Haiti.

Alumna hopes for Spartan support for shot on 'Survivor'

After spending the last two summers scuba diving, riding elephants, eating maggots, drinking duck blood soup, visiting Buddhist temples and teaching English in rural elementary schools in southeast Asia, Whitney Lund, a 2009 MSU alumna, became addicted to adventure travel. Looking for another opportunity to do something different, she decided to audition for the pinnacle of wilderness tests: the CBS show “Survivor.”

Washington making mark with defense, rebounding

Cetera Washington lives by the mantra that while defense wins games, rebounding wins championships. So it should be no surprise the junior forward recently has stepped on the accelerator in both areas, becoming a key force during MSU’s run of 10 wins in its past 11 games.

Spartans prep for Big Ten Championships

Competing against the nation’s best every week, the MSU wrestling team finally is in line to reap the benefits of facing a grueling schedule with a young lineup. As the team prepares for this weekend’s Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor, it hopes the growth of its underclassmen will carry over in the results of the competition.

BEACON center should not take place of science library

It is hard to believe that MSU could not find a different place for the new center, and that it was absolutely necessary to demolish the library. The decision was taken so fast that even the professors of the Department of Physics and Astronomy learned about that news at the faculty meeting, so that their following letter with objections was too late because the matter was already decided without asking for their opinion.
