Izzo has done enough for MSU

There is one thing on the mind of most Spartans fans right now: What will MSU men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo do next? The mania has swept the area. Fans have held at least two official rallies — one at Breslin Center and another at the Marshall Street Armory in Lansing.

Overcome with Pride

Downtown Lansing and the city’s Old Town were abuzz this weekend for Michigan Pride 2010, an annual event held in support of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. A parade, march to the Capitol, a mass commitment ceremony and performances by a country music singer were among the weekend’s festivities, which for most was a chance to be part of a united community.

Fans launch Izzo support campaign

As men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo continues mulling over a possible jump to the NBA, fans have launched a new campaign to show their support. Launched during the weekend, the “We Love Izzo” campaign will expand Monday from lawn signs and a website to billboards and banners throughout Lansing and East Lansing.

Faculty begin move to Secchia Center

After more than two years of construction, faculty have begun moving into the MSU College of Human Medicine’s Secchia Center in Grand Rapids, several months prior to the building’s grand opening in September.

MSU police officers responded to a trash can fire last Tuesday morning on the southwest side of the Farm Lane bridge, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

Teams race along urban adventure course

Dirty Feat is the first urban adventure race in Lansing and East Lansing. The race took more than 80 teams of two people each through downtown East Lansing, along the Red Cedar River, across the MSU campus and throughout the city of Lansing in a race of more than 30 miles.

OISS hosts World Cup broadcast for MSU students

The Office for International Students and Scholars, or OISS, hosts a broadcast of the World Cup every four years as a way for international students to get together and cheer for their favorite teams. After success in 2006, OISS faculty decided to place a projection screen in the Crossroads Food Court to allow students from around the world to watch the World Cup action, which will continue until July 11.

Program teaches students African languages

Professors and students from across the country gathered Sunday evening at the International Center for a welcoming reception to the Summer Cooperative African Language Institute, or SCALI, which is being hosted by MSU this year. The SCALI program is an eight-week educational language course that combines class time with extracurricular activities, which aim to immerse the student in the language and culture of an African area, director of the MSU African Students Center James Pritchett said.

MSU Entomology camp to be held

The MSU Department of Entomology’s Bug House is hosting Bug Camp for Kids from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 26 at 147 Natural Science Building. The program for six to 11-year-olds will feature numerous games, hands on activities, bug collecting and arts and crafts.

Free car seat belt checks Fri. at Lot 89

The Capital Area Safe Kids Coalition and the MSU, East Lansing and Meridian Township police departments will host a free car seat check from 4-7 p.m. Friday in Lot 89, on the corner of Farm Lane and Mt. Hope Road. By appointment, people can bring their child in his or her car seat, and a certified child passenger safety technician will inspect the seat and its installation within the car.

Geocaching contest held at MSU garden

With Global Positioning Systems, or GPS, in hand, groups of East Lansing residents searched the Michigan 4-H Children’s Garden at MSU on Saturday for coordinates to win an annual summer geocaching competition. The summer Garden Geocache Event, hosted by the Michigan 4-H Children’s Garden, sent teams of cache enthusiasts to race to several locations around the garden, with prizes hidden at each place. Created in 2000, geocaching is a way of navigating to various areas with predetermined points using a GPS.

Izzo's legacy diminished by periodic flirtations with NBA

I have been a fan of MSU basketball since the days of Greg Kelser, Jay Vincent and Earvin “Magic” Johnson. I have been a fan of MSU men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo since he started long ago as an assistant coach. Over the years, coach Izzo has again and again shown his dedication to the state and to the university in his words and actions.

When was the last time you did something for the first time? As my 20th birthday approaches, I keep finding myself thinking about “firsts.” Every year of my life, I try to accomplish as many firsts as I can. This summer, my first internship has filled up my days.

Michigan legislators are once again playing politics at a time when there are more pressing concerns. Several legislators last week said disagreements over whether to include language requiring Michigan universities to report information about research done with human embryonic cells delayed passage of the state House’s higher education budget bill.

Fans react to U.S., England World Cup tie game

The U.S. soccer team squared off against England on Saturday in each team’s first appearance in the FIFA 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The game ended with a 1-1 tie. Although neither team won, fans who watched the game at local restaurants and bars said the matchup went better than it could have.
