Student receives internship award

Ashley Morris, a 24-year-old MSU student pursuing a master’s degree in human resources and industrial relations and a second-year law student, was named the recipient of the 2010 Daniel Rosenthal Legislative Intern award.

Award to recognize inclusion efforts

MSU colleges have collaborated to establish the Martin Luther King Jr. Advancing Inclusion Through Research Award. Interested applicants must be able to demonstrate personal effort, which includes King’s passion of inclusion. The application is due by 5 p.m. Nov. 1.

Despite cuts in funding, staffers at the Red Cedar Log are optimistic for the yearbook’s future. A 2 percent reduction in funding by ASMSU, MSU’s undergraduate student government and the publication’s primary financial supporter, is part of a trend in reduced funding spanning the past several years.

DeVos gives $5M to new med center

Fundraising efforts for the MSU medical center in Grand Rapids received a multimillion-dollar boost from a billionaire businessman and co-founder of Amway, the university announced Tuesday. Richard DeVos Sr. has pledged up to $5 million in dollar-for-dollar matching funds for the Secchia Center, a $90-million facility that will open in September.

New emergency fund helps students in need

A new initiative through the MSU Division of Student Affairs and Services is helping students affected by recent fires and other emergencies obtain financial assistance. The Support Our Spartans Student Emergency Needs Fund is part of a larger fundraising effort at MSU to serve students during times of need. Requests for assistance under the program are trickling into Student Services following two devastating fires within the past several weeks that have affected MSU students.

Pilot program gets student response

MSU officials said they have received beneficial feedback from three town hall meetings held to discuss a residential neighborhood program that will centralize on-campus services for students living in dorms. A pilot program is set to launch in the fall in Hubbard Hall.

Police Brief 04/28/10

Two female MSU employees reported that a vending machine was broken during the weekend on the second floor of Student Services, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. It is unknown what, or if, anything was taken from the machine. Damage to the machine is estimated at $2,000.
