A 54-year-old male MSU employee reported damage to a vending machine inside the west lobby of Landon Hall on July 19, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

Local nonprofits host 'senior' prom

The Ingham County TRIAD Senior Prom provided dinner, dancing and live music for about 300 people who attended, and was sponsored by the nonprofit Ingham County TRIAD and Elder Law of Michigan, said Lansing police Sgt. Traci Ruiz, who organized the event and is the chair of TRIAD.

Alumni play softball for charities

Area alumni and participants dodged rain showers and fly balls Saturday morning in the hope their team walked away not only a winner, but a bit richer for charity. The MSU Alumni Association hosted the MSU Young Alumni Softball Tournament, a first of its kind for the organization, at East Lansing Softball Complex, 6400 Abbot Road.

MSU professor researches Parkinson's disease

Inspired by a documentary he watched as a college student and the patients he now treats as a physician, John Goudreau is researching a protein called Parkin that might help prevent Parkinson’s disease. There is no cure for the disease, which kills brain cells and can cause tremors, loss of movement and psychological impairment.

Ideals should be taught earlier

We need to think about the younger generation and things that might be useful and, more so, beneficial to the lives they will lead. The things we suggest to them, their parents and teachers shouldn’t be given as sermons or dictates from old “know-it-alls,” but rather as suggestions that could form a foundation for their personal, great new world.

If fines increase, MSU should make other changes

MSU’s support of a bill that could extend university control over parking, traffic and pedestrian ordinances and fines feels like the university raising funds through ticketing. The university is strapped for cash and a good way to raise funds would be through increasing fines.

Former MSU cornerback Ware prepares for professional career with Raiders

Former MSU cornerback Jeremy Ware wasn’t projected by many experts to be selected in the 2010 NFL Draft. But he was selected by the Oakland Raiders in the seventh round of April’s draft, and ended up being the only Spartan chosen. Last Wednesday, Oakland announced it had signed Ware to a four-year, $1.85 million contract, which included a $62,450 signing bonus. After Ware made his entrance into the NFL official, The State News spoke with the new Raider about his transition to the professional ranks, his future career and his time at MSU.

Residents, children learn about model trains

The Lansing Model Railroad Club was joined by the Capital Area Railway Society and the Grand Rapids Model Railroad Historical Society to host the inaugural Train Day at the Michigan 4-H Children’s Garden at MSU, and the garden plans to expand the clubs involved for next year.

A cultural exchange

Thirteen students have been at MSU as part of an exchange program with an Australian university. The three-week trip, although brief, is providing the students an insight an educational opportunity, both educationally and culturally.

Great Dairy Adventure kicks off at MSU Pavilion

the 13th annual Great Dairy Adventure on Wednesday at the MSU Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education offered a way of better understanding Michigan’s largest agricultural industry. The consumer education dairy event is organized by MSU and the United Dairy Industry of Michigan, or UDIM, and is part of the Michigan Dairy Expo ­— the largest dairy event in the state — which squeezes in activities throughout four days.

New study finds hope for Mich. economy

High-tech manufacturing holds the hope for Michigan’s economic future, according to a report released Wednesday by MSU, the University of Michigan and Wayne State University. As of 2007, advanced manufacturing employed more than 380,000 citizens, about 10.3 percent of the state’s workers. On average, they earned more than $60,000 annually, which still is increasing. By comparison, employees in traditional manufacturing jobs earned about $50,000 annually.

Every morning, I log on to my computer and check my Google News feed so I can keep up with the happenings of the world. One thing I enjoy about the news feed is that articles are listed as amalgams of several published pieces from several different sources, providing an interesting breadth of journalistic bias.

MSU's tuition rate provides educational insight

Looking at the tuition numbers for public universities in Michigan makes it seem as if MSU is giving us a pretty good bang for our buck. Even given an increase of 2.5 percent from the 2009-10 academic year, MSU’s tuition is several hundred dollars less than that of the University of Michigan, which increased 1.5 percent to $11,837, and Michigan Technological University, which increased 5.9 percent to $12,017.
