MSU alumni folk group returns to its beginnings for on-campus show

On a spring evening in 2006 outside Landon Hall, Matthew Milia and Zachary Nichols sat on a bench playing the musical saw and singing together for one of the very first times. The two soon were joined by fellow student Anna Burch, who was walking by, knew the song the pair was playing and jumped in, spurring an impromptu gig that would become the basis of the folk group Frontier Ruckus’ rustic sound.

A 20-year-old female student reported her wallet was stolen at about 2:45 p.m. Feb. 27 from the Sparty’s Convenience Store in the Biomedical and Physical Sciences Building, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

Resident mentors to see changes to program

Jason Warner has referred to resident mentors as RAs since he first arrived at MSU simply because he was more familiar with the term. Soon, however, the sophomore in the landscape and nursery management program who lives on campus won’t have to worry about this accidental misnaming — resident mentors officially will be renamed resident assistants in the near future.

MSU faces Indiana Thursday in Big Ten Tournament

Hitting the road for the Big Ten Tournament in Indianapolis, the MSU women’s basketball team (19-10 overall, 11-5 Big Ten) is out to do one thing: make magic. The Spartans will open the tournament against No. 12-seed Indiana (6-23, 1-15) on Thursday (approximately 8:25 p.m., Big Ten Network), and senior forward Lykendra Johnson said her team is confident after winning seven of the past eight games.

MSU innovations help save race car drivers in crashes

When race car drivers crash on the track, such as at Monday’s Daytona 500, a neck device innovated by MSU researchers is helping some stay safe from harm. The HANS neck device is one of many examples showing MSU’s success at bringing bright ideas to fruition, business professor Roger Calantone said.

MSU has week to unwind, prepare for CCHA playoffs

At long last, a much-needed break for the No. 15 MSU hockey team. Following a weekend split on the road at Notre Dame, the Spartans (19-13-4 overall, 14-11-3-2 CCHA) have a bye week to catch their breath before meeting Miami (Ohio) in a best-of-three series in the quarterfinal round of the CCHA Tournament.

Baseball play with last year’s loss in mind

It might be early in the season, but Justin Scanlon still hasn’t forgotten the way the last one ended. The senior shortstop and captain of the MSU baseball team walked off the field at Huntington Park in Columbus, Ohio, at the end of May 2011 with his head down and his dreams dashed, as Illinois beat the Spartans in the Big Ten Tournament championship game by a final score of 9-1.

Recently, a column was posted in The State News criticizing the treatment of America in Hollywood (“America not what media makes it,” SN 2/29). The author suggested that the American media should present family values, strong morals and the ideals America was founded on.
