When it comes to politicians and elected officials interacting with their constituents, communication sophomore Chloe Seymour thinks President Barack Obama’s campaign efforts using social media in 2008 were the precedent. Although physical fitness is important to graduate student Clark Goeman, he still falls prey to the occasional indulgences most people treat themselves to. According to a new study released by the British medical journal The Lancet, physical inactivity contributes to the death of one in every ten people. Chronicling the causes for death in 2008, the study found that inactivity resulted in 5.3 million of the 57 million premature deaths worldwide.
As moviegoers in Aurora, Colo., watched the midnight premiere of “The Dark Knight Rises,” no one expected to be killed in the process. On Friday, an armed man entered the Colorado theater wearing abnormal attire for a movie, but blended in with the crowd of fans dressed in Batman outfits. The man turned from a moviegoer to an assassin when he opened fire in the theater, killing 12 people and wounding 58, according to the Detroit Free Press. In response to the crime, local movie theaters are considering changing their rules to improve security. MJR Digital Cinemas owner Mike Mihalich could not be reached for comment Sunday, but told the Detroit Free Press Friday that the theater will not allow moviegoers to come dressed in costumes and masks. “In the 45 years I’ve been in this industry, and 35 of those years owning my own theaters, we’ve never had anything close to resembling this,” Mihalich said to the Detroit Free Press. Mihalich said the quality security already in place at the theaters will now be increased. Nutritional sciences junior Leah McGee said she thinks the rule change will not stop a shooting similar to Friday’s from recurring. “I don’t think they should (regulate) what people wear to movies because that’s not addressing the issue,” McGee said.

I think it’s great someone is promoting more volunteerism on the part of MSU students. We need to be more than just consumers, but also contributors to Greater Lansing. There should be compassion toward others and people should seek to serve, in tangible ways, those in less fortunate circumstances, often through little to no fault of their own.
Election law is boring. There’s really no way around that fact. It doesn’t boast the furor and excitement that surround political issues such as gay marriage, abortion, gun regulation or even taxation mainly because it’s not easy to classify positions on election law into a form that can be ragefully shouted or quaintly packaged onto a placard at a rally.
The tragic event that unfolded last week in Aurora, Colo., left many harmed both mentally and physically.
