No. 13 MSU to face Hurricanes in annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge

Faced with the challenge of an opponent he’s never seen before, head coach Tom Izzo has sought out an old friend for help: Brian Gregory. The former MSU assistant coach and current Georgia Tech head coach has been one of the people Izzo has turned to in preparing for the annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge, which began Tuesday night and continues when the No. 13 MSU men’s basketball team (5-1) heads to Miami to take on the Hurricanes (3-1) tonight (7:30 p.m., ESPN).

Almost any task can be made festive with the simple touch of a holiday soundtrack. For Lyman Briggs sophomore Jill Nelson and her mom, the Christmas music associated with their annual cookie baking is Mannheim Steamroller. “My mom and I both love (Mannheim Steamroller),” she said.

Importance of finding your roots

This past summer, I worked as a historic interpreter at Fort Mackinac on Mackinac Island. Dressed up as a soldier who would have been stationed there in the 1880s, I spent the summer shooting rifles, muskets and cannons for visitors.

Pell Grants face possible cuts after current year

The federal Pell Grant program, a source of student funding for about 9.4 million students nationwide, is safe from falling over the fiscal cliff — for now. As President Barack Obama and leaders in Congress continue to negotiate how to address the year-end fiscal cliff — a $500 billion combination of scheduled tax increases and mandatory spending cuts that take effect in January — they will be forced to find a quick solution or risk plunging the nation back into a recession.
