MSU baseball beats Michigan in home series, looks for spot in Big Ten Tournament

Michigan State baseball took on the University of Michigan Wolverines this past weekend in a three-game series at home, Michigan State's first in-conference home series since late April. The Spartans won the first two games of the series but fell in the last game, which brought their record to 21-23 overall, an even 9-9 in conference play and 11-8 at home.

It took all seven rounds, but a Michigan State football player's name was called at the 2024 NFL Draft. Nick Samac – a five-year center for MSU – was selected at No. 228 overall by the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday.

The Louisiana native was part of MSU’s 2021 recruiting class as a two-sport athlete. He racked up 848 receiving yards and eight touchdowns over two seasons with MSU football and he also spent a portion of the 2021-2022 season with the Michigan State basketball team after the football season ended, being the only Spartan to score against Michigan in both football and basketball.

In Detroit on Thursday night, the reaction to the hometown Lions trading up five spots to take Alabama cornerback Terrion Arnold at No. 24 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft was nothing short of euphoric. For the 30 or so Lions fans standing at the corner of Woodward Avenue and State Street, it warranted a chanting of Holmes’ name.

Tina McGinnis dropped out of MSU in 1990 to support her family after a drunk driver killed her father. For most of her adult life, when she would hear MSU's alma mater "MSU Shadows," she would cry because it reminded her of a "missed opportunity." In spring 2023 McGinnis returned to MSU to finish her degree and will graduate on Saturday, April 27.

Omaha transfer Frankie Fidler has committed to the Spartans after visiting MSU on April 11, as reported by on3. Izzo and his squad needed size on the wing following the departure of graduate forward Malik Hall, and Fidler fits that bill well. What the Spartans lacked in many areas last season — perimeter length, shooting and rebounding — Fidler is a major acquisition for Izzo and his staff.
