A "secure in place" alert at East Lansing Public Schools was lifted around 12:30 p.m., and MSU police have one person in custody. msu police received unformation about t athread made in Yijk Yak ourpolice recieved the information, there was a non specific threat against the schoo, our police  elps get a secure in place  meanwhile here our police were able to quickly trace the IP address and arrest the individdual tye person was arrested on campus, we don't have the information yet all of that information will eb releases when the suspect is arraigned. it mght happen today.  MSU police arrested the individual, they are conducting the information. They notify us that there was a threat for the school, because the threat they initially received was so general, it didm;t say if it was a threat to the university or the school district we only got with the el public schools the university police conducted the initial investigation to identify the suspect and make the arrest.

MSU Debate Team ends first half of season on high note

Ending the first half of their season on a high note, four members of the MSU Debate Team secured Top 16 finishes during their largest competition of the semester.  Competing against 140 teams from universities across the nation, the two teams that represented MSU in the octafinals include international relations junior Tyler Thur and math junior Margaret Strong, along with the partnership of international relations seniors Jack Caporal and Quinn Zemel.  “I think it’s a really great testament to the work ethic of the team itself in a narrow context," Thur said. "Coming to MSU, I remember going to all the fairs that showed all the achievements of the university as a whole, and it’s really cool to be a part of that and put on our best Spartan green to other universities.”  Before traveling to Winston Salem, North Carolina for the Franklin R.

Men's soccer defeats Oakland to advance to Sweet Sixteen

The men’s soccer team (12-4-5 overall, 4-2-2 Big Ten) advanced to the Sweet Sixteen by defeating the Oakland Golden Grizzlies (10-7-3 overall, 5-0-3 Horizon) 1-0min the second round of the NCAA tournament Sunday afternoon. This was the second time this season the Spartans played the Golden Grizzlies this season, this time avenging their 2-0 loss on Oct. 22 during the regular season.

Student group Advantage gives thanks for educational opportunities

Growing up on the west side of Detroit, college wasn’t a subject often discussed with material science engineering senior Clarence Jilek.OH It is a topic of conversation at Advantage, which is a minority retention program for MSU students that meets every Tuesday.OH It aims to ensure that students achieve their educational goals while attending MSU. The theme of the most recent event was for students to discuss “why” and “what I am thankful for.” Approaching Thanksgiving, discussions of why you attend MSU and what you are thankful for was appropriate, members said. “Everybody’s (mother) had this plan about their kids going to college and none of my boys ever did,” Jilek said. OH“My ‘why’ is graduating and being successful for those mothers because I am, in a sense, their son.”OH Jilek said he wants to set a platform for everybody else from his hometown, including himself, but mainly for the future and “letting them know if I can make it then you definitely can, too.”OH The staff put on skits for the audience portraying potential circumstances where students may feel lost and feel as though they aren’t thankful for anything, but eventually overcome. Secondary education senior Kaylen English, president of Advantage, said it was important for freshmen and upperclassmen to share with one another.

MSU Opera performances go beyond just singing

Each time he steps on stage, vocal performance senior Jon OakleyOH acknowledges that it is an opportunity for more than just showcasing his talent. While most of his family and friends are unfamiliar with opera productions, Oakley finds purpose in using his skills to create a new experience for the audience. “It’s always great to give people exposure to a different art form that they have never really seen,” he said. OH“A lot of people have predispositions about opera and they think it’s just people standing and singing, but that’s not the case.
