Polish pastry ready for Tuesday

Lansing - In a huge, brightly lit warehouse, dozens of bakers are scattered about on the floor, all concerned with upholding a tradition that started many years ago. And some say that tradition of baking paczki each year for Fat Tuesday is perfected there, at the Quality Dairy bakery, 1335 Diamond Reo Way. “We’ve got the very best fruit filling,” gushed Quality Dairy bakery operations merchandiser Dan Lovill. Fat Tuesday is the annual Tuesday prior to Ash Wednesday, when Quality Dairy stores see long lines of customers in the stores, all with the hope of returning home with paczki. Paczki (pronounced poonch-key), round jelly-filled pastries, are made only about a week prior to Fat Tuesday to commemorate the beginning of Lent’s 40-day fast. That Tuesday has become a popular day for customers, and 250,000 paczki will be made in total, Lovill said. “A batch takes about an hour and 10 minutes to make,” he said.

College also can be the perfect time to photograph your drunken or passed out roommate surrounded by kinky props and display it on a site for everyone to see. The availability of Internet access to college students has led to the creation of sites with the sole purpose of hours of mindless entertainment. One Web site, www.hotornot.com, is a popular time-killing hobby for college students.

Pub Domain more than just folk

It wades in folk waters, but this album delivers more than just the typical folk sounds. With hints of both Celtic and bluegrass influence, it is a well-rounded piece of work. The band recruited new artists with strong local reputations including Jason Portier (Dumpster Cowboys, The Lash) on bass, Bob Bryan (Steppin’ In It, James in Flames) and Emily Peterson on concertina and whistles. “Out of Here” is an up-tempo song similar to something Jewel or Ani Difranco would do, with Peterson innocently creating a flowing flute pattern in the background.
