Music offers timeless tradition of unity

What would we do without music? Perhaps a few demented folks would jump for joy and loudly shout a victory cheer, but the majority of us would most likely be reduced to tears and inexplicable sorrow or dejection. You would almost have to be branded a misanthrope to not enjoy or appreciate music.

'Dancehall' offers more romantic country songs, southern rock

Tim McGraw is one fortunate singin' country boy. He's been on top of the country world for almost a decade and somewhere in between, married Faith Hill and sang "It's Your Love." Then everything else became insignificant. On his seventh album, "Tim McGraw and The Dancehall Doctors," McGraw is still laboring for the success of his 1997 release "Everywhere," which undoubtedly is still his best to date.

'Little Red Riding Hood' not just kids' story

In keeping with the family-oriented spirit of the holidays, the Riverwalk Theatre, 228 Museum Drive in Lansing, chose a popular children's fairy tale to start the holiday season. Stan Gill's adaptation of the classic "Little Red Riding Hood" is the eighth Gill production that Riverwalk has presented in the past 13 years. "He always includes things that adults find funny," director Bill Helder said.

'The Emperor's Club' wears old clothes

What starts as a thematic adaptation of Ken Kesey's "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," ends as an updated version of "Dead Poets Society" and "Stand and Deliver" wrapped into one. Whatever its intent, Michael Hoffman's "The Emperor's Club" turns out to be one of those feel-good stories meant to make the viewer reflect upon his or her life. As a teacher of Roman history, William Hundert (Kevin Kline) is responsible for molding the lives of his students as well as teaching them random facts and dates.

'Up!' just more of the same

Shania Twain is one hot woman. Her videos make no sense and her music doesn't apply to people who aren't normally in love, but she looks good, so we don't mind watching - and her voice isn't that bad, either. Molding with society's trend, Twain's music abruptly switched from country to pop-country in 1997 with "Come On Over," launching her career further.

National bird? National turd.

In my family, we don't buy our turkeys at the store. Nope. We like to chase the fat fools down with our SUVs on the highway and haul 'em in fresh.

Leftovers make up 'Steal This Album!'

If you think "Steal This Album!" is a new album, you're mistaken. It's the left over music that never made it to a record. This 16-track collection of original, completed and unreleased material originates back to before System Of A Down signed with American in 1995 to as recently as the 2001 "Toxicity" sessions. The band claims the songs are as good, if not better than the songs that did make it to the albums - but artists always say that crap.

Everything but the bird

Thanksgiving gives people a chance to gather with loved ones and be thankful for what is important in their lives - it signals the start of the holiday season, and it's a prime time to overeat without guilt and scarf down loads and loads of turkey. Unless... for some reason, whether it be ethical or having a distaste for the animal, you're a vegetarian or vegan. Vegetarians are those who do not eat any meat, only vegetables, fruits and sometimes eggs or dairy products.
