Matchbox Twenty and Robert Randolph & the Family Band are stopping in East Lansing to rock MSU later this semester.
"Walk Witt Me" is chic. Make that "Sheek." Former LOX member Sheek Louch is out on his own and has composed an album full of aggressive East Coast rap while still managing to vary his songs in melody enough so they do not get too stale.
"Cabin Fever" is juvenile gore, humor and has an ending that feels like it was stolen from a 1950s science fiction flick. An homage to the horror movies of the past, the film fails to scare but does make you sick. It starts with a group of five college-age friends driving off for a weekend in the country.
There's a guest in town but she won't be asking for directions - she'll be giving her own.The MSU Department of Theatre will kick off its 2003-04 season with the help of guest director Carolyn Gillespie, a theater professor for the University of Michigan-Flint.After completing classes around 5:15 p.m., Gillespie commutes to MSU Monday through Friday, budgeting just enough time to grab some food and eat in the car before rehearsing with the cast of Oscar Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest" from 7 to 11 p.m.Sitting with her chin resting on her clasped-together hands, Gillespie smiles, showing her pearly white teeth, while describing what she thinks makes theater unique and interesting."I like that it uses so much of a person," the Stanford graduate said.
It's roughly 50 inches long, made of hard wood and is being ridden all over town. A newly popular form of transportation known as the longboard is giving people a different way to get to class, go down the street or simply a smoother way to wander about, said Erick Sauer, an employee at Modern Skate & Surf inside the Frandor Shopping Center. "They're just made for cruising around," he said.

We all knew when to chime in.My dad, being the only male in a house full of estrogen, sang Johnny's part, of course."How high's the water, Mama?" his deep voice demanded to know.
After what has seemed like a drought at the box office of movies that are less entertaining than watching your socks go around in a dryer, here comes "Matchstick Men." Exciting and funny, this film deserves to become a big hit with audiences. The film stars Nicolas Cage as Roy, an obsessive-compulsive con artist whose partner, Frank Mercer (Sam Rockwell), convinces him to go to therapy.
The Michigan Writers Series will kick off its fall season with novelist Craig Holden tonight at 7:30 p.m.
With Nicholas Payton's latest effort, "sonic trance," I got my first mentally taxing test as music reporter. How do you give a rating for lyrics when the album is almost completely devoid of them? The album's too good to suffer an undeserved "1" for lyrics.
The 4th annual Twilight in the Garden fund-raiser for Kresge Art Museum will be held Sunday from 4 to 7:30 p.m.
It's a Wednesday morning and alarms are sounding in a buzzing, cross-campus chorus as MSU students wake up for their first class.
Cheese isn't just another dairy product to John Partridge."There's a lot of art in cheese-making - you can't just take a recipe and follow it," the food science and human nutrition professor said.
Christopher Showerman might be strong as he can be, but he'll have to start watching out for that tree. The 92 MSU graduate was chosen to play Disney's newest jungle swinger in "George of the Jungle 2," due on video in October. The film follows the adventures of George and his son as they try to save the jungle from evil developers. The movies are based on the 1960s' cartoon, which spoofed jungle heroes of the past.
Ramble on...Most of us have heard about the new East Lansing noise violation hike, which has raised the fine for noise violations ranging from $500-$1,000 and now includes jail time, provided kegs, live entertainment and other factors are observed.I can understand the city's concern.
Cartoons exist for many reasons, but it could be argued that one of their most important purposes is to make us laugh (although some Hawaiian shirt-wearing computer geek would probably tell me cartoon boobies serve another purpose). During a week where we remember some horrific events that took place just two years ago, all of us could use a good laugh.
Laura Portwood-Stacer's eyes widened ever so slightly when she learned the music industry filed hundreds of lawsuits Monday in its continuing war against online file sharing.
Tucked away in downtown Lansing, the Michigan Historical Center, 717 W. Allegan St., is like stumbling upon a treasure when you're least expecting it.When patrons first approach the towering building, they are greeted by extensive glass doors which spill into a round rotunda.
Calvin Richardson's sophomore album, "2:35 PM," starts off with a bang and ends with a thud. The 12-song epic - about a crazy little thing called love - starts off with organs blasting and a desperate Richardson begging his girlfriend to stop pushing him around in the appropriately titled "Keep On Pushin'." The drum beat is simple and similar to almost all the CD's tunes, and Richardson has a nice falsetto voice, which will at first seem impressive.
