City officials urge students to vote

Election Day is near. As East Lansing’s city officials, we have one question for students: How’s your REP? You might think we’re talking about your reputation, but we’re talking about another kind of REP. REP is an acronym that stands for registration, education and participation. If you plan to vote in the Nov. 4 general election, it’s time you take a close look at your REP and make sure you have taken all the appropriate steps to ensure a successful Election Day.

Set partisanship aside to attend Obama rally

It sounds almost Capraesque: Barack Obama goes to East Lansing. At 2:30 p.m. today at Adams Field, the Democratic nominee for president will address MSU students on several topics. Each student who is able, regardless of he or she may lie on the political scale, should take the time to go and hear the man speak.

Debates exclude some candidates

What is a debate supposed to look like, anyway? Dictionaries tell us, by definition, a debate is an argument where different, opposing viewpoints are deliberated, usually in the format of a formal discussion.

Obama scheduled to visit MSU on Thursday

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama will hold a rally Thursday at MSU, campaign officials announced before 5 p.m. Monday. The rally, which is part of the “Change We Need” tour, is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m. at Adams Field off West Circle Drive.

Democratic rally

Thousands of people packed onto Detroit’s Woodward Avenue on Sunday to catch a glimpse of the Democratic presidential running mates, but the tone of the day’s speeches was somber despite the crowd’s fervor. Both Sens. Barack Obama and Joe Biden centered their remarks on the nation’s economic crisis, which they blamed on the Bush administration’s lack of regulation.

Rogers' Law could affect students

Are you ready to vote? Don’t worry. This isn’t part of the mountain of editorials and columns begging you to go out and register to vote — although you should be registered, and those exhortations are coming.

MSU basketball legend to visit

Former MSU and Los Angeles Lakers basketball star Earvin “Magic” Johnson will be in Lansing on Wednesday to lend his image to Sen. Barack Obama’s Democratic presidential campaign.

McCain, Palin appear in Grand Rapids Wednesday

John McCain said Wednesday he wouldn’t forget Michigan if he is elected president. About 4,000 supporters of the Republican senator from Arizona watched him speak at a “Straight Talk Town Hall” meeting at Ford Fieldhouse at Grand Rapids Community College.

Black community still questions the impact of Obama's nomination

Just a few months ago, both black and white people were questioning Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s “blackness.” That is to say, black people wanted to know if he was going to help black people and white people wanted to know if he was going to help black people exclusively.

COMMENTARY

MSU students should also think of supreme court at polls this year

Members of the MSU community should vote to re-elect Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Cliff Taylor this November. With most of the attention focused on the presidential election, few people will notice this important, nonpartisan position. However, voting for this “down ballot” office still is very important.

Water works

Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama unveiled a plan Tuesday to provide $5 billion in federal funding to protect and restore the Great Lakes. The plan would be funded by money saved from reducing tax breaks for oil companies and would only be enacted if he’s elected.
